Mechanical Engineering Intern - Summer 2026

The Opportunity:
CACI | SystemWare in Herndon, VA is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern for the summer of 2026 to assist our Senior Mechanical Engineers in development of new products. The role will interface with a cross-function team including Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Software Engineers, and Manufacturing Engineers/Technicians. You will be required to work 100% on-site.

Responsibilities:

• Using SolidWorks CAD software to translate 3D Models into 2D component drawings and 2D manufacturing assembly drawings, as well as 3D design of assembly fixtures for manufacturing use
• Using SolidWorks Flow Simulation to iterate 3D model features for optimized performance
• Evaluating prototype parts and possible hand modifying parts to achieve proper form, fix and function
• Environmental testing of prototype assemblies for performance and reliability
• Identifying alternate Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) parts

Qualifications:

Required: 

• Must be currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related degree field
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future
• Demonstrate your ability to thrive in both collaborative team environments and independent projects
• Showcase excellent communication skills and a respectful attitude that fosters a positive work culture
• Bring your expertise in SolidWorks CAD software to life in practical applications
• Apply your knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5-2018) to precision engineering tasks
• Navigate the world of machine shop tools with confidence and a keen eye for safety
• Leverage your hands-on experience in mechanical assembly to contribute to groundbreaking projects

Desired:

• Proficiency with SolidWorks Flow Simulation Software
• Competence in using basic metrology equipment
• Knowledge of 3D printing technologies
• Hands-on experience in machining, metal working, and plastic injection molding processes

Pay Range: There are a host of factors that can influence final salary including, but not limited to, geographic location, Federal Government contract labor categories and contract wage rates, relevant prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education, and certifications. The proposed salary range for this position is:

Salary : $45,900 - $91,900
