Steel Yard Supervisor

Position Summary

C&J Equipment Manufacturing is seeking an experienced and dependable Steel Yard Supervisor to lead daily yard operations and ensure the safe, efficient movement, storage, staging, and preparation of steel and fabricated materials.

The Steel Yard Supervisor will provide hands-on leadership to yard personnel while coordinating closely with fabrication, welding, production, material handling, shipping, and management teams. This position is responsible for maintaining an organized and productive yard, meeting production and material-flow requirements, and ensuring all work is performed safely and to C&J's standards for quality and performance.

The ideal candidate is a strong leader who understands steel fabrication and material handling, can prioritize work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, and is comfortable working alongside their team to get the job done right.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervise, direct, and coordinate daily activities of yard personnel.
• Plan and prioritize the movement, staging, loading, unloading, and storage of steel, materials, equipment, and fabricated components.
• Coordinate with production, welding, fabrication, shipping, and management to ensure materials are available when and where they are needed.
• Maintain an organized yard and establish efficient material-flow practices.
• Verify incoming materials and ensure steel and components are properly identified, stored, and staged.
• Operate and oversee the safe use of cranes, forklifts, loaders, and other material-handling equipment as required.
• Ensure employees follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable OSHA requirements.
• Conduct or participate in safety meetings, inspections, and corrective actions.
• Monitor employee performance, attendance, productivity, and adherence to company expectations.
• Train, coach, and develop yard employees while reinforcing safe and efficient work practices.
• Coordinate daily manpower and equipment needs based on production priorities.
• Communicate material shortages, equipment issues, production delays, and other concerns to management.
• Inspect yard conditions and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Assist with inventory control, material tracking, and documentation as needed.
• Ensure steel and fabricated components are handled properly to prevent damage and maintain product quality.
• Work with supervisors and managers to resolve scheduling, material, equipment, and workflow issues.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives designed to increase productivity, safety, quality, and efficiency.
• Enforce company policies and maintain a professional, respectful work environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

• Previous supervisory or lead experience in a steel fabrication, manufacturing, construction, industrial, or material-handling environment.
• Strong knowledge of steel products, fabrication materials, and yard operations preferred.
• Experience operating or supervising the use of forklifts, overhead cranes, loaders, or other heavy equipment.
• Ability to read and understand work orders, material lists, production schedules, and basic drawings.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced production environment.
• Strong communication and leadership skills.
• Ability to train, motivate, and hold employees accountable.
• Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety.
• Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, climb, bend, and stand for extended periods as required.
• Must be dependable, punctual, and willing to lead by example.

Preferred Qualifications

• 3 years of experience in steel fabrication, structural steel, industrial manufacturing, or a related field.
• 2 years of supervisory or crew-lead experience.
• Experience with overhead crane and heavy equipment operations.
• OSHA or other applicable safety training.
• Experience with inventory management and material tracking.
• Experience working in a high-volume fabrication or manufacturing facility.
