Controller

BUTTE FENCE INC
Meridian, ID Full Time
POSTED ON 1/4/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/4/2026

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:

The Controller is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting and accounting operations for multiple related business entities. This role leads the accounting function (AR/AP/General Ledger/Close), strengthens internal controls, improves month-end close speed, and ensures each company’s books are tax and audit-ready.

This position is hands-on and “in the weeds” where needed—owning the close process and reconciliations while building a reliable accounting machine that supports leadership decision-making. The Controller will partner with operations leadership, inventory leadership (Alliance), and external CPA/tax partners to ensure accurate financial statements for each entity. The Controller will also provide budgeting support, month-end analysis, audit coordination, year-end close with outside CPA, and oversight of banking/payroll/benefits administration across multiple entities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  (Position may include additional functions not listed.)*

Financial Close & Reporting (Primary Accountability)

  • Own and execute the monthly and year-end close process for each entity, including close calendar, cutoffs, checklists, and review procedures.
  • Ensure accurate and timely P&L and balance sheet preparation for each entity; review month-end and year-end reports and investigate variances.
  • Ensure general ledger integrity through rigorous account reconciliations and balance sheet substantiation (cash, AP, AR, inventory, accruals, fixed assets, debt, etc.).
  • Establish consistent month-end reporting packages by entity (financial statements key explanations).

Internal Controls & Accounting Discipline

  • Design, implement, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across entities (approval matrices, segregation of duties, documentation standards).
  • Strengthen controls around cash receipts, payment processing, credit cards, and vendor management.
  • Improve close speed and accuracy by standardizing workflows, training staff, and eliminating recurring reconciliation issues.

Cash, Banking & Treasury Controls

  • Oversee bank reconciliations and cash controls; ensure accurate recording of bank transfers and related journal entries.
  • Coordinate with leadership on banking relationships and information requests (no need to “be the banker,” but you own the accounting and controls around cash/banking).

Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable Leadership

  • Lead and develop AR/AP team members; ensure clear ownership, quality standards, and performance expectations.
  • Review AP/AR execution and ensure processes support accurate financials, strong vendor relationships, and disciplined collections.
  • Drive AR/AP process improvements that reduce errors and shorten close time.

Inventory Accounting Oversight (Alliance Butte)

  • Ensure accurate inventory accounting and valuation practices (including complex inventory environments).
  • Partner closely with Alliance inventory leadership to ensure inventory subledger-to-GL reconciliation and accurate period-end inventory entries.
  • Improve inventory-related controls (receiving/costing documentation, cycle count accounting, landed cost review support).

Payroll & Benefits Administration Oversight

  • Oversee payroll process controls and accounting entries to ensure seamless processing and tax-related filings (Paycom workflow coordination).
  • Coordinate with benefits providers and ensure benefits-related accounting and administration support is accurate and timely.

CPA / Tax / Audit Coordination

  • Manage year-end financial close in partnership with outside CPA firm for tax filings and reviewed financial statements.
  • Manage and coordinate GL and workers comp / insurance audits and support requests.
  • Maintain clean support schedules and documentation so audits/tax work are efficient and low-drama.

Budgeting Support & Management Reporting

  • Support annual budgeting process and financial planning; coordinate inputs from leaders and ensure budgets tie to actual reporting.
  • Prepare special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends as requested by leadership.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Serve as accounting system owner for Sage 100 across entities: chart of accounts discipline, module usage standards, workflows, and user training.
  • Drive accounting-related efficiency projects (automation, reporting improvements, close acceleration, standardized templates).

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and manage the accounting team, holding accountability for performance, training, priorities, and execution.
  • Manage vendor relationships within accounting scope (AP vendors, banking contacts as needed, CPA firm coordination).

QUALIFICATIONS: (Required knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, etc.)

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of month-end close and financial statement preparation.
  • 3 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP-level accounting principles, internal controls, and audit/tax coordination.
  • Advanced proficiency in Sage (Sage 100 preferred) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven ability to clean up and speed up month-end close, reconcile messy balance sheets, and implement repeatable processes.

Preferred

  • CPA (active or inactive) strongly preferred.
  • Experience in construction, building materials distribution/wholesale, inventory-heavy operations, or multi-entity environments.
  • Experience improving accounting processes and controls in growth-stage companies.

PHYSICAL & OTHER REQUIREMENTS: (physical, environmental, travel, etc.)

  • Ability to work in office setting, primarily sedentary; use of normal office machines.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to company locations in ID/UT if needed.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
