JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Staff Camp Lead will assist the DPW Staff Camp Manager in installing, maintaining, and striking the DPW Staff Camp. This role will assist in survey and flagging the camp, construction of the common areas, and regular maintenance of infrastructure. In addition, this includes working in tandem with the staff camp management to uphold the maintenance and cleaning expectations of the Saloon, assistance in preparing and overseeing special events, executing opening/closing procedures, and training staff that are scheduled to assist in bar operations.

This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is:

  • From August - September: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Facilities Support (70%)

  • Using basic construction and wood-working tools, work as a team to build out and strike the bar structure and common areas as directed by the DPW Staff Camp Manager.
  • Assist with load in/out of tools and materials, furniture arrangement or repair, decor, and equipment.
  • Take regular inventory for any damages or broken equipment and report to management.
  • Assist in maintaining a rolling inventory and with ordering any needed supplies for cleaning, bathrooms, and trash collection.
  • Help to create and maintain appropriate signage for special events, LNT efforts, and appropriate uses of shared resources.

Operations (25%)

  • Assist in overseeing bar and staff camp night time operations; Prepare and execute the bar’s opening and closing procedures according to schedule.
  • Assist in training assigned volunteers in preparation of bar staples, ingredients and drink recipes.
  • Proactively offer consistent communication with the DPW Staff Camp Manager about crew dynamics, general morale, conflicts and performance observations.
  • Monitor guest behavior and proactively take action when necessary to prevent inappropriate conduct while maintaining a professional demeanor, respectful boundaries and a positive attitude.
  • Maintain a respectful attitude and effective interactions with all participants, Burning Man departments and staff.
  • Implement and normalize regular check-ins, conversations about personal boundaries and situational awareness, and available resources for advice or mentorship.
  • Abide by and enforce the rules, codes of conduct, and safety protocols outlined in the DPW Handbook; Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.
  • Adjust workflow to support any fluctuating safety protocols as directed.
  • Participate in crew/manager meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.
  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Basic construction knowledge.
  • A flexible and understanding attitude that balances the needs of people and daily practices with care and attention; Able to help identify and provide a safe space for a wide variety of people.
  • Service-oriented and respectful communication; Able to evaluate, tailor style and patiently respond to needs for support. Experience with using 2 way radios.
  • Operates with behavioral integrity; maintains tidiness in work ethics and the work environment, remaining calm in stressful situations and able to quickly implement de-escalation tactics and solutions.
  • Able to receive and integrate feedback into action and maintain a respectful demeanor that leads by example; Inspires and encourages a collaborative work environment.
  • Able to proactively create ease for a crowd with preventative signage and public speaking skills; Confident to respond in an emergency.
  • Experience working with volunteers with a willingness to promote strengths and respect limitations. Ability to tactfully deescalate, reassign and redirect workflow using education, empowerment, and delegation when appropriate or necessary.
  • Effectively manages own time and supports the efforts of the team as a whole.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to practice cleaning and sanitation procedures as they apply to the Staff Camp process and protocols.
  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada

Preferred

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.


COMPENSATION

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From August - September is $15.00 to $17.00 per hour.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
