JOB SUMMARY

Do you enjoy drawing lines in the sand? The Department of Public Works (DPW) Roadworks Crew member will assist in the installation, demarcation, maintenance, and deconstruction of roads, promenades, plazas, service alleys, and thruways of Black Rock City (BRC).

This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is:

  • From August - September: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Daily Operations (90%)

  • With the Roadworks Team, install the T-bar stake intersections and delineating road pegs that determine the arcs of city roads.
  • Under direction, facilitate the “driving in” of roads to create a visual indication of roadways to other drivers.
  • Organize and deploy orange cones, barricades, and delineators to guide and direct BRC traffic.
  • Help create detailed design features of BRC roads as included in the city plan (e.g. flagging the Greeter ingress and exit roads, cutting in the ice corners, flaring the plaza keys, etc.).
  • Work with the Roadworks Team to regularly repair and maintain roads.
  • Perform and record work in a timely fashion. Ensure that all documentation, as well as any additional reports, meet standards outlined and shared by the Roadworks Manager to maintain continuity in what and how work is documented.
  • Assist in keeping a basic inventory of all materials and tools.
  • Maintain a clean and safe worksite.
  • Attend daily Morning Meetings.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (10%)

  • Work with the Roadworks Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans.
  • Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
  • Monitor personal well-being, be aware of work expectations, and proactively address any concerns with management.
  • Prepare post-event written feedback for DPW Management describing the successes of the season, areas in need of improvement and suggestions for improved efficiency; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Documentation – Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff and volunteers in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of, and the skill set necessary to complete the tasks involved with the building and dismantling of BRC.
  • A respectful demeanor, honest work ethic and enthusiasm toward working with others.
  • Clearly and concisely communicates verbally and through written correspondence. Tailors communication style to the receiving party with appropriate professionalism.
  • Able to follow directions reliably, receive and integrate feedback into identified action, and respectfully interface with collaborators.
  • Sensitive to others' needs and feelings, understanding and helpful.
  • Effectively manages own time and respects the efforts of the team as a whole.
  • Capable of safely navigating city streets and access roads that are congested with participants, bicycles, and vehicles.
  • Ability to work in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
  • Able to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.

Preferred

  • First-Aid knowledge.
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.


COMPENSATION

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From August - September is $15.00 to $16.50 per hour.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
