Position Summary
The Civil Worker is responsible for performing a variety of civil construction activities in support of industrial, commercial, and infrastructure projects. This position performs site preparation, concrete work, grading, excavation support, underground utility installation, drainage, and other civil construction tasks under the direction of the Foreman and Superintendent. The Civil Worker is expected to perform all assigned work safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform site preparation, excavation support, grading, backfilling, and cleanup activities.
- Install underground utilities, including water, sewer, storm drainage, conduit, and related systems as assigned.
- Assist with concrete forming, reinforcing, placing, finishing, and curing operations.
- Set forms, anchor bolts, embeds, and other components according to project drawings and specifications.
- Perform trenching, shoring, and excavation work in accordance with safety regulations.
- Read and interpret basic construction drawings, grade stakes, and work instructions.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, compactors, concrete equipment, and other construction equipment as trained.
- Assist with material handling, loading, unloading, and staging of construction materials and equipment.
- Verify grades, elevations, and measurements using basic construction measuring tools.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and site-specific safety requirements.
- Participate in Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), pre-task planning, and daily toolbox talks.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, incidents, or near misses to supervision.
- Wear and properly maintain all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work effectively with equipment operators, laborers, and other craft personnel to complete projects safely and efficiently.
- Perform quality workmanship that meets project specifications and customer expectations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in civil construction, heavy construction, concrete, utility installation, or site development preferred.
- Basic knowledge of excavation, grading, concrete, drainage, and underground utility construction.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and small construction equipment.
- Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic construction math.
- Ability to interpret basic construction drawings and layout information preferred.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and safe construction practices.
- OSHA 10 certification, NCCER Civil Construction certification, or other industry certifications are preferred but not required.
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to work as part of a team.
Work Requirements
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier materials with assistance or mechanical equipment.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
- Work in excavations, around heavy equipment, near moving machinery, and in changing construction site conditions.
- Work around noise, dust, vibration, wet conditions, and uneven terrain.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including fall protection when required.
- Work overtime, nights, weekends, shutdowns, and emergency schedules as required.
- Travel to project sites as required.
- Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
