Reports to: Senior Manager of Business Operations

FLSA: Exempt

Hours Worked: Typically, Monday through Friday, forty-hours per week.

However, must be flexible to meet the needs of the department and complete other projects as assigned.

Position Summary

The Associate Principal Scientist is responsible for serving as a senior member the technical services department, driving the refinement of existing testing services, and implementing new testing programs by performing the following duties and responsibilities personally or through technical services department, department supervisor, or laboratory staff.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Researches market activity to identify opportunities for new services.
  • Collaborates with the Technical Services and Business Development departments to identify and prioritize new service opportunities.
  • Develops new analytical services and programs based on initiatives set forth by the Technical Services and Business Development department collaborations.
  • Serves as Study Director, Principal Investigator, and/or Contributing Scientist for FDA and EPA regulated studies.
  • Prepares and reviews MDMV, storage stability, IQ/OQ, and GLP study protocols and reports.
  • Develops, validates, or customizes analytical methods and standard operating procedures for the internal laboratory or external clients.
  • Monitors and controls costs associated with the development of new services.
  • Participates in hands-on laboratory work to perform investigations, develop procedures, and execute method validation protocol experiments.
  • Works with individual departments to identify opportunities for efficiency, compliance, or performance enhancements with existing instrument systems or analytical tests.
  • Maintains program compliance with FDA, EPA, ICH, and USP guidance on method validation, storage stability testing, and IQ/OQ
  • Coordinates instrument selection, acquisition, installation, and qualification that pertain to development of new services.
  • Provides technical guidance to all analytical departments.
  • Reports on analytical problems after a pattern has been identified.
  • Develops or customizes analytical methods and standard operating procedures for the laboratory or clients.
  • Serves as a resource for various technical training programs (e.g. general, regulatory, safety).
  • Evaluates client methods and new business opportunities for laboratory capability.
  • Troubleshoots analytical systems.
  • Keeps abreast of the current state of scientific methodology, techniques, and regulatory guidelines relevant to the operations of the laboratory.
  • Responds promptly to customer inquiries and assists customers in determining appropriate test methodology for their particular needs.
  • Communicates with customers in a prompt and professional manner to help them understand how to use the laboratory services.
  • Advises on the preparation of quotations.
  • Completes, maintains, and processes pertinent paperwork and records.

Skills & Proficiencies

  • Able to use MS Office Pro software.
  • Able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Able to assess, develop, and implement new laboratory techniques and instrumentation.
  • Able to assess the suitability of new instrumentation for new service offerings.
  • Able to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, and legal documents.
  • Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Able to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, and sampling theory.
  • Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Education And Experience

  • Degree requirement: Master’s Degree in analytical chemistry or another scientific field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in analytical chemistry.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted in lieu of above.
