Long-term Substitute - Middle School Science Teacher

Bullis School seeks a Long-term Substitute Middle School 7th Grade Science Teacher to serve from the start of the school year through December 1, 2026. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching science to a range of learners and value interdisciplinary thinking to guide students as they develop a deeper understanding of our interconnected world through the study of science. The load includes five sections of 7th grade Life Science. This is a temporary, full-time position and is not eligible for benefits. The position reports to the Head of the Middle School. 

About the Middle School Science Department: The Middle School Science program at Bullis believes in developing students who are passionate, confident, and curious about science. Students are immersed in content through an inquiry-based curriculum aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, focusing on Core Ideas, Crosscutting Concepts, and Science and Engineering Practices. Grounded in a sense of caring and community, Middle School students embrace academic challenges and acquire scientific knowledge through lab-based practices, digital tools, fieldwork, and collaborative activities. Facilitated by highly skilled faculty passionate about teaching the whole child, students develop academic confidence, leadership ability, and organizational skills while gaining real-world applicable content that helps them understand the relevance of science in everyday life, identify connections between various sciences, explore scientific careers, and prepare for advanced study.

About the Middle School: Middle School faculty are deeply invested in students’ holistic growth and engage fully in the life of the school through advising, clubs, and community events. Successful teachers are reflective practitioners who value ongoing professional development and employ a wide range of instructional strategies to meet the needs of a diverse student population. In keeping with the school’s culture of innovation and a student-centered approach, curriculum development and lesson design are collaborative, ongoing processes. Experiential learning enhances the Middle School experience, from education programs that begin the school year to week-long Discovery Days adventures in spring.

Essential Functions

• Teach five classes
• Duties within the community, including student advising or other extracurricular activities
• Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy
• Collaborate with science colleagues to further advance department goals and initiatives
• Participate and collaborate with teachers and other subject-area experts on grade-level and interdisciplinary teams 
• Use technology to enhance students’ active, experiential, and hands-on learning
• Create learning environments that encourage risk-taking and deep learning for students with a range of learning abilities using a variety of methods and technology
• Utilize laboratory notebooks, lab practica, and authentic assessments to assess student’s content and laboratory skills
• Use of reflection and feedback aimed at continued growth in the field of teaching and working with young people
• Collaborate with grade-level colleagues to develop project-based learning opportunities for students
• Remain current in pedagogical practices and field-related trends
• Attend Middle School divisional, social studies department, grade-level, and interdisciplinary team meetings
• Communicate with parents, school counselors, and administrators on students’ progress, as needed and appropriate.
• Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standard and provide timely feedback to students
• Use the student learning management system to provide timely feedback, grades, and assignments to students

Other Duties

• Other tasks as assigned by the Head of Middle School

Education and Experience

Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Education or related field
• Minimum of two years prior teaching experience 

Preferred:

• Master’s Degree in Science, Education or related field 
• Proficiency with Windows or Apple OS, Microsoft Office, cloud computing (Google Docs, etc.), and other productivity and media software

Salary:  $300/day
