Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Temporary Industrial Engineer to support our Aberdeen, NC manufacturing facility during a critical period of growth and process optimization. This role will partner with plant leadership, production supervisors, maintenance, and the operations team to analyze workflows, improve throughput, reduce waste, and drive measurable efficiency gains across our HDPE extrusion and finishing operations.
This is a high-impact, project-based assignment ideal for an engineer who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, enjoys solving real problems on the shop floor, and can deliver results quickly with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct time studies, workflow analyses, and capacity assessments across extrusion lines, fabrication, and finishing operations.
- Identify bottlenecks, waste, and inefficiencies; develop and implement data-driven solutions to improve throughput, OEE, yield, and labor utilization.
- Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and standardized work documentation.
- Support plant layout optimization, material flow improvements, and 5S/lean initiatives.
- Analyze production data to identify trends, root causes of downtime, and scrap reduction opportunities.
- Partner with production supervisors and operators to pilot, validate, and roll out process improvements.
- Assist with capacity planning, staffing models, and cycle-time analysis to support growth and new product introductions.
- Recommend tooling, fixturing, and equipment changes that improve safety, ergonomics, and productivity.
- Provide weekly progress reports and a final project summary with documented savings, KPI improvements, and recommendations for sustained gains.
- Support cost estimation, gross margin analysis, and quoting accuracy where production data is involved.
Required Qualifications
- Associates in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 2 years of industrial engineering experience in a manufacturing environment (extrusion, plastics, or continuous-process manufacturing strongly preferred).
- Demonstrated experience with time studies, line balancing, lean manufacturing, value-stream mapping, and root-cause analysis.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis); working knowledge of Visio, AutoCAD, or similar layout tools.
- Comfort working on the production floor — including standing for extended periods, exposure to plant noise/heat, and direct interaction with operators and machinery.
- Ability to communicate clearly with hourly operators, supervisors, and senior leadership.
- Self-starter who can scope work, drive projects independently, and deliver results within the contract window.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in HDPE, plastics extrusion, or pipe/tubing manufacturing.
- Lean Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher).
- Experience with ERP/MES systems and production data analytics.
- Familiarity with OSHA standards and a strong safety-first mindset.
- Prior military service or experience working in veteran-led organizations.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- On-site role at our Aberdeen, NC plant — this is not a remote position.
- Regular presence on the manufacturing floor; PPE provided and required.
- Must be able to walk, stand, climb stairs, and occasionally lift up to 35 lbs.
- Standard schedule with flexibility to occasionally support off-shift observations or studies.
Compensation & Engagement Details
- Competitive hourly or weekly contract rate, commensurate with experience.
- Engagement length: 4–6 months, with potential for extension or conversion based on performance and project pipeline.
- W-2 contract or 1099 arrangement available; can also be filled through a staffing partner.
