What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Building & Earth?
We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee financial operations across several regional office locations. This role partners closely with operational leadership to ensure financial accuracy, strong internal controls, and strategic financial planning across multiple active projects.
The Division Controller will lead accounting operations, ensure compliance with GAAP, and provide financial insight to support project performance, forecasting, and long-term business growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Leadership
- Oversee all divisional accounting operations including general ledger, job cost accounting, revenue recognition, and financial reporting
- Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Manage the division’s month-end and year-end close processes
- Develop and maintain strong internal controls and financial procedures
Project & Operational Finance
- Partner with project managers and operational leaders to monitor project financial performance
- Review job cost reports, WIP schedules, and project forecasts
- Support project budgeting, cost tracking, and margin analysis
Planning & Analysis
- Lead divisional budgeting and forecasting processes
- Analyze financial results and provide insights on performance variances
- Develop financial models to support operational and strategic decision-making
- Provide regular financial reporting to executive leadership
- Provide financial guidance on large geotechnical engineering projects
Compliance & Process Improvement
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and industry standards
- Support external audits and internal financial reviews
- Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, reporting processes, and operational efficiency
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor accounting staff
- Partner with corporate finance leadership to align financial processes and reporting
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA preferred
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience
- Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience in construction, infrastructure, engineering, or project-based industries strongly preferred
- Experience with job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
- Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills
- In office position in Birmingham, AL
- Minimal travel may be required
