Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Operations
- Lead and coordinate the daily activities of yard personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and productive operations.
- Direct employees in the loading, unloading, storage, and movement of materials using forklifts and other material-handling equipment.
- Supervise the receiving of incoming materials and ensure proper storage and inventory practices are followed.
- Provide hands-on leadership by assisting with daily yard operations and performing the same duties as other yard team members when needed.
- Inspect outgoing loads to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, load limits, company standards, and safety regulations.
- Prepare and reconcile bills of lading, packing slips, and related documentation.
- Monitor inventory movement and support accurate material handling practices throughout the yard.
- Train and mentor new yard employees on product knowledge, equipment operation, safety procedures, housekeeping standards, and company processes.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on continuous improvement and operational excellence.
- Communicate performance expectations, productivity goals, and operational priorities effectively.
- Assist customers with load building and material loading while ensuring a positive customer experience.
- Provide information regarding inventory availability, delivery status, and product-related inquiries.
- Partner with sales and operations teams to ensure customer needs are met efficiently and professionally.
- Champion a culture of safety by ensuring compliance with all company safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular yard inspections to identify and address safety concerns.
- Organize and lead periodic safety meetings and encourage employee participation in safety improvement initiatives.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional yard environment, ensuring debris and scrap materials are disposed of or recycled properly.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Four (4) years of experience performing and coordinating yard, warehouse, manufacturing, or material-handling activities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience directing work crews in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience operating forklifts and material-handling equipment.
- Strong knowledge of building materials, yard operations, product storage, and load-building practices.
- Ability to effectively plan, organize, and coordinate workflow to maximize labor and equipment efficiency.
- Advanced understanding of equipment operation and yard machinery, including maintaining required certifications.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to train, motivate, and develop employees.
- Ability to prepare schedules, reports, and operational documentation.
- Working knowledge of basic mathematics, inventory controls, and material calculations.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
- Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve varying weather conditions, temperature fluctuations, dust, and equipment noise.
- Regular standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting, and operating equipment are required.
- Frequently lift and carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
- Must be able to safely perform physical tasks associated with yard operations, including lifting, pushing, kneeling, and climbing.
