What are the responsibilities and job description for the Service Route Technician I position at Alaska Pet & Yard Services, L.L.C.?
Route Service Technician I - (20-35 hrs per week)
Work independently.
Stay active.
Get paid more as you become great at what you do.
Looking for a part-time job where you're trusted to work independently instead of having a supervisor looking over your shoulder all day?
You'll spend most of your day outdoors running your own route, traveling from customer to customer and staying physically active.
Starting pay is $25/hour during training. After training, our performance-based compensation averages $25–$30/hour, plus mileage reimbursement that typically runs approximately $200–$500 per month.
If you're dependable, physically active, enjoy working independently and like the idea of being handed a route and trusted to get it done, this could be a great fit.
Why You Might Really Like This Job!
This isn't a traditional job where you're working next to a supervisor all day.
Once you're trained, your route is yours to run.
We provide the customers, established routes, training, equipment and support. You're trusted to manage your day, stay productive and take care of your customers.
Some of the things our field employees enjoy about the position include:
$25/hour starting pay
$25–$30/hour average compensation after training
72¢ per mile mileage reimbursement while running your route. Candidates can use a car, SUV or truck that is FWD, AWD or 4WD. Note that we do not transport the bag in vehicles. Bag goes in the customers trash can prior to leaving the customer site.
Typically $200–$400 per month in mileage reimbursement
Working independently for most of the day
Staying physically active
Spending the day outdoors instead of inside a building
Spending plenty of time around dogs
Established routes and recurring customers
Monday–Friday being the normal workweek most of the year.
Being rewarded financially as you become more efficient at the job
Having a support team available without someone constantly standing over your shoulder
Join a Company Alaskans Trust!
Alaska Pet & Yard Services has been serving Alaskans for nearly two decades.
Our customers have rewarded us with a 4.8-star Google rating from more than 460 reviews.
We're proud of that reputation because it comes from years of showing up, taking care of our customers and doing what we say we're going to do.
When you join our field team, you're not joining a new company trying to figure things out.
We have an established customer base, recurring routes, proven systems, training, experienced field leadership and an office team supporting our technicians.
You're not responsible for finding customers or building your own route.
We provide the customers and the work. Your job is to take great care of them.
Once you're trained and comfortable with your route, you'll spend most of your day working independently.
You'll receive an established route and travel from customer to customer using your own vehicle. You'll typically service approximately 20-40 residential properties per day.
At each property, you'll enter the customer's yard, locate and remove pet waste, dispose of it in the customer's trash container and move on to your next customer.
We do not transport pet waste in your vehicle.
Yes, you're picking up dog poop. There's no reason to dress that part up.
But you're also outside, moving throughout the day, visiting dogs, running your own route and working without somebody hovering over you.
For the right person, that's a pretty good workday!
Get Better at the Job. Earn More!
Everyone starts at $25/hour during our approximately 60-day training/probationary period.
Once you've successfully completed training, you'll transition to our performance-based compensation system.
As you learn your routes, become more organized and develop greater efficiency, your effective hourly compensation can increase.
Our trained Route Service Technician II employees average approximately $25–$30/hour.
Our compensation system is designed to reward employees who become really good at what they do.
This does not mean rushing through customers' yards or cutting corners. Quality service always comes first.
It means learning your routes, staying organized, maintaining a productive pace and consistently providing great service.
Become great at the job, and your compensation can reflect it.
Actual earnings vary by employee and are not guaranteed. Performance-based compensation depends on productivity, organization, physical ability, route familiarity and consistently completing quality work.
Plus Mileage Reimbursement!
Candidates use their personal car, SUV or truck that is FWD, AWD or 4WD. Mileage reimbursement is paid in addition to your regular compensation. Note that we do not transport the bag in vehicles. Bag goes in the customers trash can prior to leaving the customer site.
We currently reimburse 72¢ per mile while traveling between customer services.
Depending on route size and the number of services completed, mileage reimbursement typically averages approximately $200–$400 per month.
Mileage reimbursement is separate from wages and is intended to help compensate for the cost of using your personal vehicle for route work.
All compensation is paid twice per month.
What Is the Work Like Throughout the Year?
The job changes with Alaska's seasons, and we want you to know exactly what you're signing up for.
-Summer & Fall
For most of our field team, this is the easiest and most enjoyable part of the year.
You'll service established weekly customers, spend your days outside and enjoy Alaska's summer weather.
Once you're familiar with your customers and route, the work becomes pretty straightforward.
-Winter
Yes, we work during the Alaska winter.
If you know how to dress properly for winter conditions, winter route work can actually be peaceful and straightforward.
Snow and frozen ground make some yards more physically demanding, and occasionally you'll need to chip pet waste out of frozen snow or ice.
You'll need appropriate winter clothing and a vehicle equipped with proper winter tires (not all season tires).
-Spring Cleanup Season — March through May
Spring is a completely different animal.
It's our busiest and most physically demanding time of year.
As the snow melts, our work becomes similar to spring cleanup for a landscaping company. There is considerably more walking, raking, shoveling and physical labor.
Spring is hard work.
We'd rather tell you that before you apply than surprise you after you're hired.
The intense workload is seasonal. Once spring cleanup is completed, we return to our normal weekly maintenance routes.
Work Availability
- Earliest shift starts at 8:00 AM with a minimum of four hours servicing yards.
- Latest shift is 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Who Does Well Here?
You don't need experience picking up pet waste. We'll teach you how to do the job.
What we're really looking for is the kind of person who:
Shows up consistently and can be counted on
Likes working independently
Doesn't need constant supervision to stay productive
Has a strong work ethic
Enjoys physical work and staying active
Is comfortable working outdoors in all Alaska seasons
Likes dogs and doesn't mind picking up after them
Can maintain a steady, efficient pace throughout the day
Is organized and capable of managing an established route
Takes pride in doing the job correctly even when nobody is watching
Communicates well with customers and coworkers
Has a history of reliable attendance with previous employers
Has the scheduling flexibility required of a full-time Technician I
Previous experience in landscaping, construction, route delivery, property maintenance, general labor or another physically demanding job is helpful, but it's not what determines whether you'll succeed here.
We can teach the job. Reliability, work ethic and self-motivation are much harder to teach.
Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding outdoor position.
You need to be physically capable of:
Walking and working outdoors for extended periods
Repeatedly entering and exiting your vehicle throughout the day
Walking through deep snow and across uneven terrain
Raking and shoveling during spring cleanup season
Occasionally lifting or carrying approximately 50 pounds
Working outdoors in rain, snow, cold and warm weather
Maintaining an efficient working pace while servicing approximately 20–30 properties per day
You don't need to be an athlete, but you do need to be physically capable of performing outdoor manual labor throughout the workday.
Vehicle & Driving Requirements
Because you'll use your personal vehicle to run your route, reliable transportation is essential to this position.
Applicants must have:
A reliable personal car, SUV or truck that is FWD, AWD or 4WD with no more than 100,000 miles at the time of hire. Note that we do not transport the bag in vehicles. Bag goes in the customers trash can prior to leaving the customer site.
Appropriate tires for the season (i.e. True winter tires during the winter season, etc.)
A valid driver's license
Active automobile insurance
A good driving record
Appropriate tires for the season.
Pet waste stays at the customer's property and is not transported in your vehicle. We provide the service equipment and supplies you need, including your shovel, bucket, pooper scooper, bags and other necessary materials.
A motor vehicle record and background check are conducted as part of our hiring process.
This Job Isn't for Everyone
We'd rather attract the right people than convince everyone to apply.
This probably isn't the job for you if you:
Need someone constantly telling you what to do
Struggle with attendance or getting to work on time
Need to be finished at exactly the same time every day
Cannot maintain the required full-time availability
Don't like physical work
Don't like working outdoors
Aren't comfortable around dogs
Don't want to work in snow, cold or rain
Aren't comfortable using your personal vehicle for work
Are looking for a slow-paced job
But if you're dependable, like working independently, enjoy staying active and want a job where becoming better and more efficient can actually increase what you earn, you may really enjoy working here.
