School Maintenance Worker

Position Summary
The School Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, functional, and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position performs routine maintenance, repairs, custodial support, and building upkeep to ensure school facilities operate efficiently and comply with safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform general maintenance and repair work throughout the school building and grounds.
- Conduct routine inspections of classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and common areas.
- Complete minor repairs including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and HVAC troubleshooting.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of exterior areas including sidewalks, parking lots, entrances, and playgrounds.
- Set up and break down rooms for school events, meetings, and activities.
- Monitor building systems and report major repair needs to administration or outside vendors.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency situations.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and fire regulations.
- Assist with seasonal maintenance including snow removal, salting, and landscaping.
- Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, equipment, and tools.
- Operate maintenance equipment and power tools safely and responsibly.
- Support custodial staff as needed to maintain cleanliness standards.
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and confidentiality requirements.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous maintenance, facilities, custodial, or building operations experience preferred.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general repair techniques.
- Ability to use maintenance equipment and tools safely.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical labor, including standing, bending, climbing, and lifting.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality required.
- Must successfully complete required background clearances.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a school or educational setting.
- Knowledge of safety and OSHA regulations.
- Valid driver’s license preferred.
Work Environment
This position requires working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. The role may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, maintenance equipment, and physical demands associated with building upkeep.
