Position Summary

The Special Education (SPED) Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, individualized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The teacher implements district-approved curriculum, adapts instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs, and collaborates with families, general education teachers, and support staff to ensure students achieve academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional success in the least restrictive environment.

Key Responsibilities Instruction and Student Support
  • Deliver specialized instruction aligned with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Adapt lessons and implement differentiated instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs.
  • Support students' academic achievement, behavioral development, social-emotional growth, communication, and daily living skills.
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional practices and appropriate interventions to maximize student success.
  • Foster student independence, self-advocacy, and participation in both special and general education settings.
IEP Development and Compliance
  • Develop, implement, review, and update Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with the IEP team.
  • Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Conduct assessments and collect data to guide instructional decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and district special education regulations and timelines.
  • Participate in eligibility meetings, annual reviews, reevaluations, and other required special education processes.
Classroom Environment
  • Create and maintain a safe, structured, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Establish effective classroom management practices that promote respect, engagement, and positive behavior.
  • Support students in developing appropriate social and interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain a classroom that encourages learning, independence, and collaboration.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Collaborate effectively with general education teachers to support student inclusion and instructional accommodations.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, goals, and educational needs.
  • Work closely with administrators, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, behavior specialists, counselors, and other support personnel.
  • Supervise, train, and provide direction to paraprofessionals and teaching assistants assigned to the classroom.
Additional Responsibilities

Depending on the assigned program or student population, responsibilities may include:

  • Implement individualized behavior intervention plans and positive behavior supports.
  • Provide instruction and support for students with moderate to severe disabilities.
  • Assist students with personal care needs, including toileting, feeding, mobility, and hygiene, when required.
  • Utilize assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and specialized instructional materials.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and district initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal or district administration.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

  • Valid South Carolina teaching certification/licensure in Special Education.

  • Knowledge of:- Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and implementation.

    • Federal and South Carolina special education laws and compliance requirements.
    • Evidence-based instructional strategies for students with diverse learning needs.
    • Classroom management and positive behavior support techniques.
  • Ability to effectively use educational technology and maintain accurate student records.
