What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior UX/UI Designer - Chess and Connected Products position at Bryght Labs?
Bryght Labs creates products that make complex games and technology feel approachable, intuitive, and fun. Best known for ChessUp, our connected chess board platform, we are continuing to grow our lineup of chess products while also expanding into other categories.
We are looking for a Senior UX/UI Designer to help shape intuitive, engaging, and beautifully crafted user experiences across our chess products and connected product ecosystem, including the Android and iOS companion apps that support those products, while also contributing to new products in other categories. This in-person role is based at Bryght Labs’ innovation lab and design studio in Lenexa, Kansas, and is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on, highly collaborative environment and brings deep experience designing thoughtful, high-quality product experiences across hardware and software.
A core requirement for this role is a genuine understanding of chess players. The ideal candidate is an active chess player who is deeply familiar with the chess improvement journey and regularly uses platforms and tools such as Chess.com, Chessable, and similar products. We are looking for someone who can bring that firsthand perspective into the design of products built for chess players.
What you’ll do
- Lead UX/UI design across connected products from early concept through production and launch
- Design intuitive user experiences across hardware interfaces, embedded screens, Android and iOS companion apps, and other connected product experiences
- Translate complex product capabilities into simple, clear, and engaging interactions
- Create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, high-fidelity UI designs, and design specifications
- Partner closely with firmware, software, and hardware teams to create highly integrated product experiences
- Help define interaction models, visual systems, and interface patterns that can scale across a growing product lineup
- Contribute to product direction by helping shape features, user flows, and requirements based on player needs, business goals, and technical constraints
- Bring a deep understanding of how chess players learn, train, and improve, and apply that insight to product decisions
- Prototype, test, and refine concepts quickly through iterative development
- Conduct user research, usability testing, and design validation to improve product clarity and usability
- Advocate for the user while balancing technical constraints, business goals, and product requirements
- Help define design standards, best practices, and documentation for future product development
- Provide design leadership across UX/UI development and help elevate design quality and process across the team
What we’re looking for
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience, with 5 years of UX/UI design experience
- Active chess player with a strong understanding of the chess improvement journey
- Deep familiarity with chess learning and training platforms such as Chess.com, Chessable, and similar tools
- Strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional UX/UI work for shipped consumer products, digital products, or connected experiences
- Experience designing for Android and iOS apps, companion apps, touchscreens, embedded interfaces, or connected devices
- Strong visual design skills with a high bar for clarity, polish, and usability
- Experience creating wireframes, prototypes, user flows, and detailed design specifications
- Strong product instincts and the ability to help shape features, priorities, and overall user experience
- Ability to think deeply about interaction design, information hierarchy, and system behavior
- Experience collaborating closely with firmware, software, hardware, and cross-functional product teams
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain design decisions clearly and persuasively
- Strong attention to detail and a high standard for product quality
