Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer

Position Summary:
The I&C Engineer will be responsible for researching, designing, and developing devices and components for process controls. This role involves extensive hands-on work in instrumentation and controls, collaborating with internal teams, EPCs, and suppliers to ensure compliance with project specifications and national standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, specify, and develop instrumentation and control systems for process environments
- Select and specify Pressure, Temperature, Level, and Flow Meters and other process instruments
- Specify both discrete, analog, and networked control solutions
- Ensure compliance with NEC hazardous area classifications and high-temperature applications (>400°C)
- Prepare specifications and design-bid documentation
- Review supplier designs against licensor, code, and customer requirements
- Assist in designing and modifying new and existing instrumentation systems
- Support the development of instrumentation standards for multiple facilities
- Recommend equipment improvements and additions
- Participate in the review of Management of Change (MOC), PHA action items, construction info requests, and change order requests
- Assist with local, state, and federal permitting applications
- Support I&C construction activities: identify deficiencies, manage punch lists, and inspect rectifications
- Witness I&C testing, assist with loop checking, documentation verification, plant commissioning, and start-up
- Liaise with EPC contractors and equipment suppliers
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Automation Engineering
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar role
- Training in process and plant engineering preferred
- In-depth knowledge of National Electric Code, especially Article 500
- Familiarity with Functional Safety standards (IEC 61508/61511 and SIL levels)
- Experience working within a Management of Change system
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills
Technical Experience:
- 5 years of PLC programming and configuration in a process environment (Rockwell, Siemens, Codesys-based equipment)
- Controls system design down to the component level
- 5 years of instrumentation setup, testing, and commissioning in construction/process environments
- 5 years configuring/testing communications using gateway devices (Modbus, Profinet/Profibus, Foundation Fieldbus)
