The Bruce Museum seeks a Museum Educator to join its Audience Engagement Department. This is a newly created position, responsible for designing and leading hands-on educational programs for students from early childhood through high school. The Museum Educator will have a special focus on the Museum’s afterschool programs with community partners, and Saturday family programming.

The Bruce Museum is seeking a highly motivated, energetic team player with a love of hands-on STEAM education and project-based learning. The Museum Educator reports to the Manager of School and Community Partnerships. This is a full-time (35 hours/week), non-exempt position with a Tuesday-Saturday schedule with a typically one-hour, unpaid lunch break. Start and end times will vary each day to accommodate staffing needs at programs and events. Occasional work on Sundays and Mondays may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach onsite and offsite school, afterschool, and family programs including birthday parties.
  • Lead STEAM programs at the Bruce Museum and at outreach locations for community partners.
  • Learn about the Museum’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
  • Set-up and clean-up after programs take place.
  • Check supplies and prep materials for upcoming programs.
  • Attend specific training sessions to learn about museum exhibitions and collections.
  • Assist with program material preparation, recruitment events and meetings for specific initiatives.
  • Assist with large-scale evening and weekend events, like family days and lectures, as necessary by preparing and assisting with hands-on activities, registration, set-up, and clean-up.
  • Perform other tasks related to job or Audience Engagement.

Recommended Education, Experience, Knowledge, & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in art, science, cultural history, education, museum studies or a related field required.
  • 1-3 years of experience working in a museum, nature center, cultural organization, or comparable experience in a related institution.
  • Teaching experience, particularly with children, is required.
  • Teaching experience with elementary and pre-kindergarten students is preferred.
  • Understanding of the basic tenants of STEAM pedagogical theory.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate Museum vehicles and travel to off-site locations as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be available to work during the following peak periods:
  • October 12 to December 22
  • April 12 to June 18

Pay: $23.00 - $24.00 per hour
