Position Summary

The Field Lead / Area Superintendent oversees profitable installation of project work by directing co-workers and interfacing, coordinating, and directing other trades. Responsible for a specified area or shift of a large project, or an entire small or medium project. When running a small or medium project, responsible for managing the client relationship. Responsible for safety, planning, cost, quality, and productivity.


Essential Responsibilities:

Plans Work

  • Participates in the transition, start-up, close-out, and post-job review.
  • Reviews the project documents to establish the most cost-effective way to build the project while considering the impact of safety, quality, and schedule.
  • Provides input in establishing the budget and is held accountable for the units agreed to in that budget.
  • Provides input to the project schedule and is held accountable for meeting that schedule.
  • Participates in and/or leads project pre-planning meetings and supplies input for short-term look-ahead schedules.
  • Responsible for manpower; interviews and assists in the selection process of new hires while following Company recruitment and hiring guidelines.


Coordinates and Executes Work

  • Manages cost by adjusting crew size, make-up of crew, and means and methods to address quality and efficiencies.
  • Meets with site staff and foremen daily to plan production and review schedules, materials, manpower needs, pre- and post-pour checklists, and safety requirements.
  • Interfaces with the client and serves as the primary Company representative when running a small or medium size job.
  • Anticipates and mitigates schedule and constructability conflicts with other trades and other areas of the project.
  • Supervises and coordinates layout of the work; verifies line and grade, embeds, anchor bolts, and blockouts against the drawings before placement.
  • Coordinates delivery of materials, equipment, and services, and the installation of work by subcontractors and other trades, to maintain the construction schedule.
  • Ensures compliance with Company policies, local labor laws, and labor agreements where applicable.
  • Assigns cost codes to time and quantities and verifies timecard accuracy.
  • Provides target and feedback information to the crews.
  • Recommends and leads change by implementing measures to improve production results and equipment performance.
  • Prepares and distributes short-term interval work schedules.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure adherence to safety, quality, and productivity standards.
  • Identifies, documents, and communicates changes in scope and supplies the supporting field record.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate security for equipment.


Oversees and Mentors Direct Reports

  • Mentors Foremen, Leads, and developing field leaders through hands-on coaching, regular feedback, and increased responsibility, with an emphasis on developing future Broughton field leadership.
  • Supervises, trains, evaluates, and develops direct reports.
  • Addresses complaints appropriately.
  • Provides guidance, direction, coaching, and support to direct reports to maximize individual and overall performance.
  • Responsible for holding timely performance appraisals and progress reviews.
  • Assists direct reports in developing short- and long-term goals that align with Company mission and strategy.
  • Ensures direct reports receive appropriate training that aligns with development plans. Training may be remedial, maintenance, or geared to promotion.
  • Takes appropriate action to develop direct reports including development plans, promotions, demotions, lateral moves, corrective action, and progressive discipline.
  • Collaborates with HR to ensure compliance with all employment laws and related Company policies; may be responsible for conducting training or coordinating workshops related to such compliance.


Ensures a Safe Work Environment

  • Champions an incident-free and injury-free work environment for the project.
  • Establishes tone and sets the example by ensuring that safety rules are followed and that corrective action is taken when rules are broken.
  • Stops work when conditions or behavior require it.
  • Serves as Silica Competent Person for the assigned area and enforces the exposure control plan.
  • Assumes responsibility for completion of pre-task planning and toolbox talks.
  • Assumes responsibility for proper procedures related to worksite incidents.


Minimum Requirements:

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field and 3–5 years of related field experience; or high school diploma or equivalent and 8–12 years of concrete construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Foreman experience required.
  • Line and grade experience required.
  • May require appropriate craft certifications.
  • Valid driver’s license and a motor vehicle record acceptable to the Company’s insurer.


Self-Perform Concrete Experience

  • Demonstrated experience planning and executing concrete work with self-perform crews, not solely managing subcontracted concrete scope.
  • Hands-on working knowledge across the full sequence of the work: layout and line and grade, formwork, reinforcing, embeds and anchor bolts, placement, finishing, and curing.
  • Experience owning quality control of work in place, including tolerance conformance and inspection of completed work.
  • Experience planning manpower and establishing, tracking, and improving crew production rates.
  • Experience selecting and adjusting means and methods to suit the work, the schedule, and the crew.
  • Experience planning and maximizing equipment utilization across an area or project.


Language / Communication Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business and technical documents, cost reports, legal and regulatory documents, plans, drawings, specifications, and scopes of work.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of field management, craft, and customers.
  • Bilingual - English/Spanish a plus.


Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to read and use a tape measure and apply associated math skills.
  • Ability to understand concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to calculate mathematical figures such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to analyze and compute mathematical differences from all stages of drawings, from conceptual through final, including development of shop drawings.
  • Ability to read and work from cost reports and understand job cost and units-based budgeting.


Computer Skills

  • Working understanding of Microsoft software programs such as Word and Excel; ability to understand, customize, and modify spreadsheets.
  • Working understanding of Procore — daily logs, drawings, RFIs, submittals, and photos.
  • Basic understanding of relevant software and technologies commonly used in construction management.


Interpersonal Skills

  • Good listening skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with other Superintendents, Foremen, and other trades.
  • Ability to move from being a co-worker to a manager.
  • Ability to develop good presentation skills.


Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Knowledgeable of the related trades and construction activities that precede, interface with, and follow concrete work.


Physical Demands:

  • Regularly walks and works on uneven ground, formwork, reinforcing mats, and active placement areas.
  • Regularly stands, walks, climbs, stoops, kneels, crouches, and balances for extended periods.
  • Ascends and descends ladders, temporary stairs, and excavations.
  • Frequently uses hands to handle or feel; regularly required to sit, talk, and listen.
  • Frequently lifts and carries up to 50 pounds; occasionally up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Visual acuity to read drawings and inspect work in place; hearing sufficient to communicate in high-noise areas.


Work Environment:

  • Work is a combination of jobsite trailer office and field environments involving the various conditions encountered on a construction site.
  • Outdoor work in all weather, including heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, moving equipment, elevated work, open excavations, and airborne dust including respirable crystalline silica.
  • Required personal protective equipment worn at all times in active work areas.
  • Extended hours, early starts, and scheduled night or weekend placements as the work requires.


Training/Certifications:

Required

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction
  • Silica Competent Person
  • First Aid / CPR


Company Safety Program

  • Completion of all Broughton Construction safety training, on the schedule set by the Company.
  • Participation is non-negotiable and is a condition of continued assignment.


Preferred

  • ACI Concrete Flatwork Finisher or Field Testing Technician Grade
  • Competent Person — excavation, fall protection, or confined space
  • Equipment operator certifications


Renewal

  • Silica Competent Person every 3 years
  • First Aid / CPR every 2 years


Travel:

  • Required.
  • The Company self-performs across multiple states; extended out-of-town assignment is a condition of this role.


Work Location:

  • Field — active jobsite, with jobsite trailer office time.
