Transmission Modeling Engineer / SME
12 Month contract (potential for conversion or extension)
Remote (must reside in Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan/North Dakota/South Dakota/Colorado/Texas/New Mexico)
$60-80/hr on W2 (dependent on YOE)
Overview
We are seeking a Transmission Modeling Engineer / SME to support a strategic transmission planning initiative at Xcel Energy tied to its Vision Suite Proof of Value (POV). This role will support the advancement of transmission modeling capabilities by improving model development, data integration, and planning workflows across the organization.
This individual will work across engineering and technology teams to support power system modeling, planning data readiness, and workflow improvements connected to the Databricks platform and broader planning tool environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead transmission system modeling and analysis to support planning scenarios and POV objectives
- Build, validate, and iterate on power system models using industry-standard planning tools
- Support improvements in model performance, consistency, and usability
- Partner with engineering, planning, and technology teams to improve data flow into transmission models
- Support the use of the Databricks platform for organizing, transforming, and improving access to planning and model input data
- Help identify opportunities to improve:
- model input quality
- workflow efficiency
- repeatability of planning processes
- automation of manual tasks
- Collaborate across teams supporting Vision Suite, planning data, and modeling workflows
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members as needed
- Contribute to recommendations for future-state transmission planning and modeling capabilities
Required Qualifications
- 6 years of experience in transmission planning, power systems engineering, or transmission modeling
- Hands-on experience with transmission modeling tools such as:
- PSSE
- PSLF
- PowerWorld
- or similar platforms
- Strong understanding of utility transmission systems, planning processes, and model development
- Experience working with large data sets that support engineering or planning analysis
- Familiarity with data environments, data transformation, or engineering workflows connected to platforms such as Databricks
- Ability to work across engineering, planning, and IT/data teams
- Experience mentoring, leading workstreams, or supporting less experienced team members
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting utility modernization, grid transformation, or planning technology initiatives
- Experience with Databricks in support of engineering, analytics, or planning workflows
- Familiarity with Python, SQL, or scripting for model support, automation, or data preparation
- Exposure to data integration, analytics, or cloud-based engineering environments
- Experience working within large utilities or across multiple operating companies
