JOB TITLE: Staff Civil Engineer
LOCATION: Minneapolis / Duluth / Sioux Falls (on-site)
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Contract or Contract-to-Hire (6–12 months preferred)
POSITION OVERVIEW
A leading engineering and consulting organization is looking for a Staff Civil Designer to play a hands-on role supporting a wide range of projects across local government, utilities, and industrial clients throughout the Upper Midwest. This position is ideal for a designer who enjoys being deeply involved in production design, drafting, and technical execution, while collaborating closely with engineers and project teams to deliver high-quality civil design solutions.
The ideal candidate brings strong Civil 3D and site development experience and is comfortable contributing across multiple project phases—from planning and design through final documentation. In this role, you will be a key technical contributor, taking ownership of drafting and design efforts that help ensure projects move forward efficiently, accurately, and on schedule.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contributes to site and land development projects through roadway and utility design, storm drainage and stormwater management systems, sediment and erosion control, and traffic control and facility design.
- Performing volume calculations for excavation, dredging, and grading activities
- Ensuring all designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements
- Conducting quality assurance reviews of design drawings to support scope, budget, and schedule goals
- Coordinating design and drafting efforts with project managers, engineers, and multidisciplinary teams
- Maintaining well-organized project files, drawings, and technical documentation
- Supporting overall project schedules, budgets, and delivery objectives
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Drafting Technology or a related field with 7 years of experience, OR
- Associate degree with 8 years of experience, OR
- 9 years of progressive civil design and drafting experience
TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY REQUIRED IN:
- AutoCAD
- Civil 3D
- MicroStation (preferred or exposure)
- Microsoft Excel
- Demonstrated experience with civil design, calculations, and system layouts
- Strong understanding of civil engineering principles and design practices
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary project team environment
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience supporting utility, local government, or industrial projects
- Background in drainage, grading, and large-scale site modeling (linear/fixed infrastructure)
- Exposure to evolving CAD and design automation tools and workflows
- Experience transitioning between MicroStation and Civil 3D environments
