Underground Transmission Engineer
Location: Orlando, FL (On-site 5 days a week)
Department: Transmission & Distribution (T&D)
Employment Type: Full-time
About the Role
Our engineering client is expanding their Underground & Submarine Cables design and construction capabilities — and launching a new team based in our Orlando office. Whether you bring deep technical expertise or emerging leadership skills, we’re looking for motivated engineers ready to help shape the future of underground transmission line design.
This role supports the delivery of EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects that are modernizing and rebuilding the electric grid. You’ll be part of the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) group and work on high-impact utility projects ranging from 2.4kV to 345kV.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or contribute to multidisciplinary design teams (2–10 engineers/designers) executing underground transmission and distribution projects
- Develop complete construction packages for transmission and distribution voltage levels, including duct banks, manholes, conduit systems, cable replacements, feeder installation, and equipment upgrades
- Perform routing analysis using Google Earth, ArcGIS, and other CADD/GIS tools to evaluate route feasibility and construction impacts
- Develop complete construction packages and drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation
- Conduct cable sizing and ampacity calculations using tools such as CYMCAP and Polywater Pull Planner to verify electrical and mechanical performance
- Support cost estimating and project tracking through Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Project
- Prepare written reports, design narratives, and documentation in Microsoft Word and presentation materials in PowerPoint
- Coordinate internally using Microsoft Teams, OneNote, and Visio to maintain efficient communication and workflow records
- Review and markup design packages using BlueBeam for PDF-based collaboration and quality control
- Conduct field inspections, take measurements, and assess underground and overhead electric systems on public/private utility infrastructure
- Analyze construction feasibility through route studies, conflict analysis, and cost estimating
- Leverage simulation software to model electrical and physical performance, and recommend design optimizations
- Produce high-quality technical reports, visuals, and summaries that communicate findings and recommendations clearly to internal teams and clients
- Prepare detailed engineering calculations and specifications (e.g., cable pulling, ampacity, voltage drop, pole loading)
- Lead or support QA/QC reviews for design packages, technical studies, and construction documentation
- Collaborate with procurement, construction, permitting, and environmental teams throughout the project lifecycle
- Maintain strong communication with project stakeholders to ensure deliverables meet client expectations
- Prepare proposals, cost estimates, execution schedules, and participate in project planning efforts
- Mentor junior team members and support professional development within the team
- Regularly meet with clients, subcontractors, and external stakeholders to provide updates, gather feedback, and maintain alignment
- Support strategic business development by nurturing client relationships and identifying new opportunities
- Participate in thought leadership initiatives including conferences, marketing, and internal technical forums
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (Master’s degree may substitute for 1 year of experience)
- 3–10 years of experience in underground utility transmission and/or distribution design
- Proficiency with underground design tools and CADD/GIS platforms
- Strong understanding of underground construction methods and electrical system equipment
Preferred:
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and related utility design software
- FE/EIT certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Familiarity with topographic mapping, subsurface utility locating, and surveying techniques
- Knowledge of permitting, easements, right-of-way, and NESC code compliance
- Experience conducting field inspections and working directly with clients
Soft Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong collaboration and cross-functional coordination abilities
- Comfortable in both team environments and client-facing roles
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities
- Ability to solve complex problems and recommend efficient solutions
