Transmission System Operator
12-month contract-to-full-time
Location: Richmond, VA
Final compensation determined based on experience and skills:
- Associate: $85K
- Mid-level: $95K-$145K
- Senior: $105K-$165K
Role Overview
Transmission System Operators play a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System (BES). In this role, you will take and/or direct timely real-time actions to maintain system reliability during both normal and emergency conditions. Operators monitor system elements, respond to disturbances, support field personnel, and help maintain voltage and power flow across the transmission network. You will utilize Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to control equipment, prepare and execute switching orders, coordinate with internal/external stakeholders, and maintain accurate operational logs. This is a hands-on, operationally critical role with clear processes, structured training, and opportunities for growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor elements of the Bulk Electric System and respond to status changes, disturbances, and system events.
- Make appropriate notifications during emergencies, weather events, and operational changes.
- Utilize reactive resources to maintain voltage schedules and regulate power flows among interconnected entities.
- Prepare and implement switching orders to safely isolate equipment for maintenance.
- Provide clear verbal instructions to field personnel engaged in switching operations.
- Control transmission and distribution equipment through SCADA systems.
- Maintain detailed operational logs and reports for regulatory and internal compliance.
- Support storm response and other emergency activities as needed.
- Completion of the Dominion Energy System Operations qualification program within 18 months of hire/transfer.
Work Schedule
This position follows a structured 12-week rotational schedule:
- 4 days per week
- 14 night shifts per rotation
- 23–26 day shifts, depending on the occurrence of a long break
- Scheduled training days included in each rotation
- 13-day unpaid break between rotations, with the option to pick up additional work during this period if desired
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Related experience in electrical, mechanical, operational, or utility environments (such as transmission operations, power generation, substation work, or industrial systems).
- Knowledge of safety and emergency procedures.
- Strong critical thinking and attention to detail.
- Effectiveness in high-stress situations.
- Proficiency with computer systems (Microsoft Office and operational tools).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to ethical, reliable, and collaborative work practices.
Education
- Associate’s degree in a technical discipline OR 4 years of experience in lieu of a degree.
Licenses & Certifications
- Active NERC Transmission Operator (TO) or Reliability Coordinator (RC) Certification is required at the time of hire.
- (Nice to have) PJM Transmission System Operator Certification: Training to obtain this will be provided.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Office-based
- Emergency Response: Must be able to report to work within 60 minutes under normal driving conditions.
- Must be able to operate a Dominion Energy vehicle or drive on the company’s behalf.
Salary : $95,000 - $145,000
