A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Prepare descriptions and plats for parcels acquired for State projects, then finalize plans.
  • Review and evaluate parcel packets submitted by consultants to ensure accuracy and compliance with current policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Make drawings and sketches of field survey details from field data or office calculations.
  • Operate survey equipment (e.g., electronic data collectors, total stations, GPS equipment, robotic total stations).
  • Visit courthouses to research land deeds and transport equipment (e.g., automatic level, GPS equipment, total station, magnetic locators, and robotic total stations) to job sites.
  • Research and compile information from state, county, and city records to complete field surveys.
  • Maintain records, land deeds, titles, and prepare notes to present a clear view of the project.
  • Perform mathematical computations and prepare time sheets and car mileage sheets.
  • Contact supervisors, utilities, planners, and property owners concerning survey work.
  • Provide information and guidance in safety matters and practices.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Required to be a Licensed Surveyor in the State of Indiana.
  • Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.
  • Specialized knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and surveying.
  • Considerable knowledge of engineering principles and practices applied in the location, design and construction of roads, bridges, dams, and buildings.
  • Considerable knowledge of Right-of-Way Engineering techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of laws, policy and procedure pertaining to surveying, right-of-way engineering and real estate.
  • Basic knowledge of the various methods that are utilized in the acquisition of land and associated properties.
  • Ability to use computer software and programs including SPMS, LRS, MIP, Chronolog, PeopleSoft, Outlook, Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), Inroads, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to operate of all types of surveying instruments.
  • Ability to gather, collate and classify data.
  • Ability to handle routine and sensitive inquiries from and contacts with government officials, property owners and contractors.
  • Ability to occasionally move 50 pounds.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Difficulty of Work:

Work performed can vary from routine to high degree of difficulty. The work requires specialized knowledge of survey technology, use of statistical analysis and environmental concerns. You will work within established guidelines, and exercise judgment and decision making when on worksite. Your work is carried out under the specifications and guidelines based on established guidelines. You will use considerable judgement and decision making to provide final approval for certification of ROW plans and parcel packets.

Responsibility:

As Surveyor you will establish guidelines, practices, and procedures are available, if needed, to carry out a wide variety of duties in accordance with general work instruction. You are responsible for the completion of work and the accuracy of records, forms, reports, and technical information disseminated. Therefore, errors in work or faulty judgment can cause substantial embarrassment and delays. Questions that may arise are discussed with supervisor, otherwise work is reviewed in terms of overall efficiency and smoothness of operations. You will be subject matter experts who work independently. You will work on complex assignments which requires considerable judgement and decision making. You will provide final approval for certification of ROW plans and parcel packets.

Physical Effort:

  • Depending on the duties performed or environment setting, frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs or ladders, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and/or similar movements may be involved.
  • This role requires keen observational and hearing skills to stay alert for possible dangerous situations.
  • This role requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle and/or heavy equipment (e.g. tractors, snowplows, or factory equipment) and drive short and long distances in all weather and light conditions.

Working Conditions:

  • This role performs work in a standard office environment.
  • This role performs work outdoors and exposure to various outdoor weather conditions, rough terrain and wildlife may occur.
