Brookgreen Gardens seeks an experienced Plant Production Coordinator to lead all aspects of greenhouse operations within our 10,000 sq. ft. facility at the Doc and Martha Lachicotte Horticulture Complex. This is a professional-level horticulture position ideal for someone with formal training and proven experience in plant propagation, greenhouse management, and production scheduling.
In this critical role, you will ensure the highest standards of plant health and aesthetic quality across our living collections and plant sales programs, supporting Brookgreen’s mission of horticultural excellence and environmental stewardship.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead production of cool- and warm-season annuals for display and collection plantings.
- Plan, propagate, and produce plant materials for seasonal sales, including pricing, inventory tracking, and labeling.
- Oversee production of 700 poinsettias annually for Nights of a Thousand Candles.
- Serve as primary contact for conservation horticulture projects (e.g., Amaranthus pumilus partnership with Huntington Beach State Park).
- Manage all aspects of daily plant care — irrigation, fertilization, pest management (IPM), transplanting, and sanitation.
- Operate and maintain greenhouse environmental controls, irrigation systems, and related equipment.
- Supervise and train volunteers and assist with floral design projects for special events.
- Collaborate with horticulture leadership on plant trials, performance evaluations, and new cultivar introductions.
- Monitor inventory, supplies, and materials; ensure regulatory compliance and documentation.
Qualifications
Required:
- Associate’s degree or higher in Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in a greenhouse or nursery production environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of plant propagation, integrated pest management (IPM), and plant nutrition.
- Competence with greenhouse environmental systems and maintenance.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital record-keeping.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in a range of outdoor conditions.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or closely related field.
- Experience supervising volunteers or staff.
- Familiarity with conservation horticulture or native plant propagation.
