PAY TRANSPARENCY STATEMENT:
In accordance with The Massachusetts Pay Transparency Act, BNHC provides reasonable pay range for each posted position. Actual compensation will be based on multiple factors such as relevant experience, education and training to determine offered rates. This range represents the organization's good faith estimate of the possible compensation at the time of posting.
POSITION SUMMARY:
To provide clinical assistance to the Eye Service providers by collecting & documenting patients’ medical and ophthalmic data into their electronic health record (EHR); to perform routine or special testing procedures independently or with a provider; and to participate in Eye Services’ daily operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. The Ophthalmic Assistant (OA)/Ophthalmic technician (OT) will keep all exam rooms properly stocked and equipment appropriately cleaned. He/she will follow health center protocols regarding sterilization & aseptization, review monthly diagnostic and therapeutic medication expiration dates and perform periodic equipment calibration.
2. Escort the patient from the waiting room into the clinical area and perform pre-exam testing which involves objective data collection utilizing automated and /or manual instrumentation. Interpret for patients or request a health center medical interpreter when appropriate.
3. Obtain & record patients’ chief complaints & symptoms, family eye & medical history, and visual acuities.
4. Perform special testing as requested by providers such as ocular photography, OCT, pachymetry and visual fields.
5. Assist the staff optometrists and consulting ophthalmologists with other clinical activities as requested.
6. Participate in the contact lens division: including instruction and dispensing of contact lenses; maintaining contact lens inventory and ordering patients' contact lenses.
7. This Eye Services staff member will maintain high regard for patient privacy in accordance with BNHC policies while maintaining high standards of integrity by following the mission and values of BNHC.
8. Other duties as assigned.
POSITION LEVELS
This OA/OT position has three levels of competence/classification. The distinction between the three levels derives chiefly from competence, credentials and complexities of assignment. Normally, a newly hired employee without or with limited experience/without certification but adequate formal training (on going on-site) would be employed as an OA. As the employee acquires competence to the full requirements of the next level through experience, training and certification, he/she could be promoted to the next appropriate certified level: COA or COT.

Qualifications:QUALIFICATIONS:
Possess a high school diploma and at least one year of work experience in a medical setting or a position of significant responsibility.
Enrollment within the first year of employment with the Eye Services in a continuing education program toward certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant or Technician if not already certified. Any exception requires approval from the Director of Eye Services and CEO.

Bilingual strongly preferred if certified.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in a busy community health center in a downtown business district. Long hours are sometimes required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical demands requiring lifting of small pieces of equipment, boxes, and /or patients not to exceed forty (40) pounds. Mostly standing and walking required. Visual acuity sufficient for frequent reading. Hearing acuity sufficient for holding conversation with or without audio devices.
Salary : $19 - $27
