Role Summary: The Intervention Specialist plays a critical role in accelerating student learning by providing targeted academic intervention and supporting school wide instructional initiatives. This role works directly with students while also partnering with teachers and school leaders to strengthen literacy, mathematics, and extended learning supports based on student data.
The Intervention Specialist leads small-group and individualized instruction for students requiring additional academic support and contributes to the design and implementation of school wide intervention systems. This includes supporting literacy initiatives, mathematics instruction improvement, and extended learning programs.
This role does not supervise teachers, but may model instructional practices, host classroom observations, and facilitate professional learning opportunities to strengthen instructional practices across the school.
The Intervention Specialist may also provide project leadership for grant-funded initiatives related to literacy development, math achievement, and extended learning programs.
What you’ll do
Basic Components of the Job Description for the Intervention Specialist position include (but are not limited to):
Student Intervention & Academic Support
• Provide targeted small-group and individualized instruction in literacy and/or mathematics for students requiring additional academic support.
• Design and implement intervention strategies aligned to grade-level standards and school instructional priorities.
• Monitor student progress through formative assessments and adjust interventions accordingly.
• Collaborate with teachers to identify students requiring additional intervention supports.
• Maintain documentation of intervention services, student progress monitoring, and program implementation.
School wide Instructional Initiatives
• Support the implementation of school wide literacy initiatives aligned with the Science of Reading and California ELA/ELD frameworks.
• Contribute to improving mathematics instruction through collaboration with teachers and instructional teams.
• Analyze student performance data (diagnostic, formative, and summative) to inform instructional decisions and intervention strategies.
• Support alignment of instructional practices across grade levels to strengthen student outcomes.
• Extended Learning Programs
Support the implementation and continuous improvement of extended learning programs that provide additional academic support and enrichment opportunities for students.
Contribute to extended learning in multiple ways, including:
• Facilitating targeted small-group academic intervention during extended learning time (e.g., tutoring, after-school learning blocks, or enrichment periods).
• Using student data to help identify and prioritize students who would benefit from tutoring, intervention, or enrichment opportunities.
• Modeling effective instructional strategies or lessons for extended learning educators to strengthen academic supports.
• Facilitating training or professional learning for after-school educators focused on literacy, mathematics, or intervention strategies.
• Assist with maintaining documentation and program monitoring related to extended learning initiatives, including attendance tracking and alignment to program goals.
• Collaborate with school leadership and extended learning staff to ensure extended learning opportunities align with student needs and school academic priorities.
Instructional Modeling & Professional Learning
• Model effective instructional strategies through demonstration lessons and student intervention sessions. • Host classroom observations to make instructional practices visible to colleagues. Facilitate or support professional development sessions focused on literacy instruction, mathematics strategies, or intervention practices. • Share instructional resources, strategies, and materials that support effective intervention and differentiated instruction.
Grant-Supported Project Leadership
• Support implementation of grant-funded initiatives related to literacy instruction, mathematics achievement, and extended learning programs.
• Assist with program implementation, data collection, and reporting requirements associated with instructional improvement grants
• Serve as a project lead for specific initiatives related to intervention programs, literacy development, or math instructional improvement as assigned.
