Deputy Director of Security

Organization: Bright Star Community Development Corporation (Bright Star CDC) FLSA Status: Exempt
Location: Multiple Bright Star CDC Sites, Including 24-Hour Transitional Housing Schedule: Full-time; includes evenings, weekends, and on-call availability
Position Summary
The Deputy Director of Security supports the Director of Security in overseeing all security operations across Bright Star CDC sites. This role provides direct supervision of Security Officers, ensures consistent implementation of policies, and plays a critical role in maintaining safe, trauma-informed environments for staff, shelter residents, and visitors. The Deputy Director serves as the primary operational leader on assigned shifts and acts on behalf of the Director when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership & Supervision
● Provide daily supervision and performance oversight of Security Officers across multiple sites.
● Serve as shift commander or lead security authority during assigned hours.
● Ensure adequate staffing levels and coverage for all facilities.
● Conduct roll calls, post assignments, and shift briefings.
Policy Enforcement & Compliance
● Ensure all security operations comply with Bright Star CDC policies, City of Chicago housing requirements, and applicable laws.
● Monitor officer conduct, uniform standards, and adherence to procedures.
● Assist with development, implementation, and updates of security policies and post orders.
Incident Management & Response
● Respond to critical incidents, disturbances, and emergencies.
● Lead de-escalation efforts and coordinate emergency response.
● Review, approve, and submit incident reports to the Director of Security.
● Serve as liaison with law enforcement, emergency services, and site leadership during incidents.
Training & Officer Development
● Assist with onboarding, field training, and mentoring of Security Officers.
● Ensure officers maintain required certifications, licenses, and training hours.
● Conduct refresher training on de-escalation, trauma-informed care, and shelter protocols.
● Identify performance gaps and recommend corrective or disciplinary action when necessary.
Communication & Collaboration
● Maintain regular communication with the Director of Security regarding incidents, staffing, and operational needs.
● Collaborate with shelter leadership, case managers and resident assistants, and as requested by the Director of Security.
● Prepare operational reports, staffing summaries, and incident trend analyses.
Administrative & Planning Support
● Assist with schedule creation, timekeeping review, and payroll verification, as requested by the Director of Security.
● Participate in risk assessments and security audits.
● Support special events, emergency planning, and winter contingency operations.
● Act as Director of Security in their absence as assigned.
Qualifications Education & Experience
● Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Public Safety, or related field preferred.
● Minimum 5–7 years of security, law enforcement, or public safety experience.
● At least 2–3 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
● Experience working in shelters, housing programs, community-based organizations, or human services strongly preferred.

Illinois Licensing & Compliance Requirements
● Valid PERC (Permanent Employee Registration Card) issued by IDFPR.
● Completion of required Illinois security training hours:
o 20 hours (unarmed)
o 40 hours (armed) valid FOID card if applicable
● CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days).
● Successful background check and drug screening.
Working Conditions
● Work is performed across multiple Bright Star CDC sites, including a 24-hour transformational housing.
● Requires flexibility for nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins.
● May involve high-stress or emotionally intense situations.
Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
