Summary
The Assistant Technical Director works closely with the Technical Director in the planning and implementation of scenery for a four-show season. Some primary responsibilities of the Assistant Technical Director are in the construction and load-in of scenery for each show alongside the technical director. A solid knowledge of scenic construction is required with strong knowledge of technical design for stage.
Holistic effective communication and dissemination of information as well as a love of music and a sense of humor when appropriate is essential to the successful execution of this position.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe, productive scene shop.
- Train or supervise the training of each staff member in proper safety procedures in conjunction with the Technical Director.
- Coordinate with Technical Director and Director of Production in the oversight of festival rigging training, lift training, and other safety training.
- Draft (create working drawings) and build 4 shows for Mainstage Opera season and any other special projects as assigned.
- Assist Head Carpenter with oversight of Staff Carpenters, and Apprentices.
- Coordinate with Technical Director and Head Carpenter to assign daily and weekly tasks.
- Assist in supervision of construction and rigging for main stage productions.
- Work in conjunction with Technical Director to oversee scene shop including purchasing and maintenance of materials and tools with the approval of the Director of Production.
- Oversee and assist in the education of scene shop and festival staff.
- Coordinate with Technical Director to maintain budget and work schedule.
- Oversee all load-ins and outs of productions as directed by the Technical Director.
- Oversee the shop in the absence of the Technical Director.
- Coordinate with Technical Director in the inventory and organization of shop and festival assets.
- Attend all production meetings unless needed to oversee the shop, as directed by the Technical Director.
- Assist in turning in petty cash and next week’s schedule on a weekly basis.
- Work with Technical Director, designers, and directors to realize designs from beginning to end.
- Oversee the Head Carpenter in the pre-season preparation of the scene-shop
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Supervised by the Technical Director and Director of Production.

- Ability to lift up to 50lbs reliably and safely.
- Willingness to take ownership of your position and not blame other staff members or outside circumstances for your degree of success on individual tasks and on your position as a whole.
- Able to take instruction and feedback from supervisors and use it to improve your job performance. Understanding of channels of communication and the importance of clear and open communication at all times.
- Maintain calm under pressure and receive/ intake information from multiple sources that you quickly prioritize and relay to the Technical Director or Director of Production and act upon if deemed appropriate.
- Above all, must possess a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and ability to work well in a team dynamic.
