This position will work 7.5 hours/day from June 22, 2026 - July 9, 2026 (Not including July 3, 2026). There will be one additional paid prep day prior to the start of Summer School (June 18, 2026).


The hourly rate for this position will be calculated based on experience and education.


The person assuming responsibility for this position will supervise and instruct students enrolled in Fire Science. Responsibilities include teaching students the fundamentals of Fire Science 1 curriculum, safety, and physical training. This individual will be expected to work collaboratively and cooperatively as a team member with Skills Center staff in combining/ enhancing services for students.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work with Skills Center administration, Skills Center staff, and agencies including related advisory committees, professional associations, and postsecondary institutions to develop integrated, relevant academic, employability, and student learning competencies
  • Utilize and maintain approved Skills Center program and core curricular student learning

  • Prepare and maintain long-range and weekly lesson plans with identified learning targets
  • Understand and comply with all state regulations regarding Fire Science, Criminal Justice, and Homeland Security
  • Provide effective instruction in all subject areas, meeting the needs of the students in the classroom
  • Collaborate with administration and staff to provide needed instruction for students and to participate in delivering collaborative projects
  • Engage in purposeful, deliberate planning for instruction using current teaching techniques
  • Follow District and State guidelines for essential learning and instructional strategies
  • Model lifelong learning, positive self-esteem, and respect for others
  • Coordinate opportunities for students to get on-site at local agency locations to provide real-world, practical experiences
  • Set and maintain high personal, professional, and instructional standards for self and students
  • Adhere to Washington Code of Professional Conduct
  • Instruct students in leadership development, both inside and outside of the classroom; develop and implement effective leadership opportunities for all students, as well as, basic conduct skills
  • Implement and participate on community advisory committees, curriculum and program reviews
  • Maintain equipment and supplies
  • Participate in in-service and professional training
  • Maintain appropriate and required student records
  • Communicate student assessment goals and progress to students, parents and student’s sending school on a regular basis
  • Work as an effective member of the Skills Center staff to evaluate, market, and improve the assigned program
  • Communicate and interpret the Skills Center program to patrons and stakeholders
  • Perform other related duties as may be required or assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • The instructor must have at least 3 years’ full-time experience as a current firefighter or EMT beyond the learning period
  • Qualifies for a valid Washington State Career & Technical teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement as required by law and regulations
  • Teaching experience in an educational and/or community setting
  • Eligible for a work-based learning certificate
  • Demonstrates classroom management procedures providing for individual and group instruction
  • Uses appropriate disciplinary procedures, establishes clear parameters for student behaviors appropriate for the workplace
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal form
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm and optimism in teaching and motivating students
  • Demonstrates flexibility in dealing with change, cooperation with others, and adapting to a variety of assignments and conditions
  • Assesses student needs and prescribes and implements effective instruction to meet those needs
  • Gains the respect and confidence of students, parents, staff, and the business community through modeling of professionalism
  • Values and provides for individual diversity and cultural differences
  • Experience with non-traditional learners
  • Demonstrates awareness of and applies appropriate current educational strategies
  • Demonstrates technology proficiencies consistent with district guidelines and integrates current technology
