About the Role
The Supervisor – Payroll & Accounts Payable plays a key leadership role within our Accounting team, leading critical financial operations that support the people and operations powering our cooperative. As the Supervisor – Payroll & Accounts Payable, you will oversee payroll, accounts payable, and cash management functions to ensure the accurate and timely processing of employee compensation and vendor payments while safeguarding the financial assets of the cooperative.
What You’ll Do
Payroll
- Oversees and supervises payroll, accounts payable, and cash management functions to ensure the accurate, timely, and compliant processing of employee compensation, vendor payments, and financial transactions. Responsible for managing all payroll activities including wage calculations, tax withholdings, voluntary and involuntary deductions, payroll tax reporting, and maintaining payroll records and procedures.
- Collaborates closely with Human Resources to ensure accurate benefit deductions and reporting, while preparing payroll analyses, labor budgets, statistical reports, and financial exhibits related to employee compensation, benefits, and incentive programs.
- Provides data and support for audits, regulatory reporting, and actuarial reviews, while addressing employee payroll inquiries and resolving discrepancies.
Payables, Transportation and Cash Management
- Directs accounts payable and cash management operations including vendor setup and maintenance, invoice review and approval, and the processing of vendor payments through checks, ACH, and wire transfers
- Oversees purchase card programs, manages online banking access, and monitors daily cash positions and short-term cash forecasts to ensure adequate funding and liquidity
- Reviews and approves accounting entries related to cash receipts and disbursements, reconciles payables and related accounts, and ensures compliance with federal reporting requirements such as 1099 filings, fuel tax reporting, and unclaimed property regulations
- Identifies and implements process improvements, resolves payment and coding discrepancies, and ensures accurate financial reporting and efficient financial operations
Employee Direction
- Lead, coach, and provide direction to employees and work teams to promote safety, productivity, collaboration, and effective performance.
- Collaborate with leadership to establish departmental goals aligned with Brazos Electric’s strategic plan and monitor progress
- Set performance expectations, provide ongoing feedback, and conduct performance evaluations using established management processes
- Recommend staffing needs and organizational structure, and partner with HR in recruitment, hiring, and compensation decisions
- Support employee development through career planning, training coordination, and skill development initiatives
- Promote a positive and professional work environment by addressing employee concerns, facilitating conflict resolution, and consistently applying company policies
- Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures and encourage continuous improvement and cross-functional collaboration
- Reinforce a strong culture of safety and compliance with Brazos Electric’s safety program
What You’ll Bring
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Bachelor’s degree in finance or business with a major in accounting
Experience
- At least five (5) years of experience in accounts payable, payroll processing and governmental payroll reporting
Certifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred, but substantial experience may be substituted
