Payroll Specialist- Tax & General Ledger
- Long-term contract
- Hybrid onsite in Lewisville TX
Position Summary: The Payroll Specialist- Tax & General Ledger supports accurate and timely payroll tax compliance and payroll-related general ledger accounting. This role partners closely with Payroll, Accounting, and external tax agencies to assist with reporting, reconciliations, audits, and system activities within a Workday environment, while maintaining strong internal controls.
Responsibilities
Payroll Tax Compliance
- Assist in assuring timely and accurate calculation, filing, and payment of all federal, state, and local payroll taxes
- Assist with reconciling payroll tax liabilities to filings and payments; research and help resolve discrepancies
- Assist in preparing and filing quarterly and annual payroll tax returns (e.g., Forms 941, 940, W-2, W-3, and state equivalents)
- Assist in managing payroll tax agency correspondence, audits, notices, and jurisdiction changes
- Support the maintenance of payroll tax setup, jurisdictions, and rates within Workday
General Ledger & Accounting
- Reconcile payroll clearing, tax, and liability accounts
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities
- Partner with Accounting to ensure payroll activity is accurately reflected in the general ledger
- Assist with internal and external audits related to payroll, taxes, and financial controls
Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
- Support compliance with internal policies and SOX/internal control requirements
- Serve as a payroll tax and payroll GL support resource
- Assist with Workday enhancements, testing, year-end activities, and system upgrades
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and support automation initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3 years of experience in payroll tax and payroll GL accounting
- Strong knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations
- Proven experience reconciling payroll and payroll tax GL accounts
- Proficiency working within payroll and accounting systems, with the ability to learn and navigate Workday
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data reconciliation)
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage confidential and sensitive information
Preferred Qualifications
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or FPC certification
- Experience with Workday Financials
- Multi-state payroll tax experience
