Software & Controls Engineer (Siemens PLC) – Rochester Hills, MI
Location: Rochester Hills, MI
Travel: Approximately 25% (Potentially higher during the first 18 months, including possible occasional travel to the UK and South Carolina in future) - Realistically about two, 3-4 week trips a year, in January and July; Potentially smaller weekend trips throughout the year
Overview:
We're looking for a Software & Controls Engineer with strong Siemens PLC programming experience to support robotic automation systems for automotive manufacturing. This position focuses on PLC software development, commissioning, machine startup, and customer support for robotic paint and sealer applications. Candidates who enjoy travel, troubleshooting complex automation systems, and programming Siemens PLCs will thrive in this role.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and implement PLC, HMI, and GUI software for robotic automation systems.
- Program and debug Siemens PLCs using TIA Portal.
- Develop control system specifications and define I/O requirements.
- Support electrical design reviews and system integration.
- Commission, debug, and optimize automation systems during machine startup.
- Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), installation, and customer buyoff.
- Provide field support and troubleshoot controls systems at customer facilities.
- Create software documentation and standard operating procedures.
- Train customers on system operation when required.
- Collaborate with engineering teams from concept through project completion.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum one year of PLC programming experience.
- Strong Siemens PLC programming experience using TIA Portal (v20 preferred).
- Experience programming PLCs from scratch.
- Experience with HMI development.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and automation systems.
- Experience commissioning automated manufacturing equipment.
- Excellent communication and customer interaction skills.
- Ability to travel up to 25%, with flexibility for increased travel and occasional international assignments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Siemens S7-1200/S7-1500 experience
- Allen-Bradley PLC experience
- FANUC robotics experience
- Profinet and industrial networking experience
- Process Simulate or Emulate3D experience
- Automotive automation or robotic paint/sealer system experience
- Electrical panel troubleshooting and wiring experience
- Startup, commissioning, and field service experience
