Overview
The Shelter Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the shelter, including staff and volunteer management, animal population oversight, inventory control, and the implementation of policies and procedures. This position ensures safe and efficient shelter operations, supports positive customer experiences, and may temporarily assume certain responsibilities of the Director of Operations when needed.

Duties & ResponsibilitiesCustomer Service

  • Provide excellent service to customers, animals, staff, donors, and all individuals interacting with BVSPCA.
  • Represent BVSPCA positively and professionally.
  • Communicate respectfully and foster a positive, supportive work environment.
  • Work efficiently as a team member and take proactive steps to solve problems.

Animal Care & Operations

  • Develop a working knowledge of shelter operations, relevant animal laws, and basic animal health and behavior.
  • Ensure clients are greeted and assisted promptly and courteously.
  • Conduct staff reviews under the direction of the Director of Operations and provide hiring/dismissal recommendations.
  • Maintain open communication with office, kennel, medical staff, and upper management.
  • Oversee daily workflow, animal population management, and staff coordination.
  • Run and review inventory reports across all BVSPCA locations; move animals through processes efficiently.
  • Oversee and manage adoptions, intakes, and outcomes.
  • Make proactive, critical decisions that support efficiency and reduce liability.
  • Manage customer service experience and help resolve escalated situations.
  • Participate in euthanasia decision processes and procedures as part of the core unit.
  • Alert the Director of Operations and/or CEO when animals should be evaluated for euthanasia.
  • Order supplies, verify incoming inventory, and assist in inventory budget management.
  • Assist with annual and operational budgeting.
  • Create staff schedules, review timeclock entries, and submit payroll.
  • Provide employee feedback and communicate counseling needs to the Director and/or HR Coordinator.
  • Create and maintain organized shelter records and streamline workflow processes.
  • Serve as a liaison for external and internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee foster, rescue, and transfer programs; assist with Safety, Enrichment, Behavior, Pets for Life, Life Saving, special events, and other programs as needed.
  • Perform duties of Animal Care Attendants or Adoptions/Customer Service roles when required.
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Operations.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate animal records, including treatments, exams, and test results, using PetPoint software.
  • Assist with inventory management and supply ordering.

  • Ensure a safe work environment by following and modeling all safety guidelines.
  • Address safety concerns immediately to prevent risks to staff, volunteers, clients, animals, or the organization.
  • Maintain clean, sanitary work areas and follow pest and rodent control protocols.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma with shelter experience or a bachelor’s degree with animal handling experience.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to multitask under high-pressure conditions.
  • Commitment to BVSPCA’s mission, values, and goals.
  • Experience with safe and humane animal handling and restraint, including healthy, ill, and feral animals.
  • Comfort working in a shelter environment with regular animal interaction.
  • Computer literacy and the ability to learn PetPoint software.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, and able to initiate and complete tasks independently.

Working Conditions

  • Work performed primarily in a shelter setting.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and extended standing.
  • Regular computer work (2–4 hours/day) for data entry.
  • Exposure to animal bites, scratches, allergens, and shelter-related environmental conditions.
  • Repeated lifting and carrying of animals up to 50 lbs.

Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
