Position Announcement

SUMMARY:
Part referee, part cheerleader, and part lunchtime superhero, the 3–6 Lunchroom Monitor keeps the cafeteria running smoothly while helping students enjoy a safe, respectful, and positive lunch experience. With a watchful eye, a friendly smile, and the occasional reminder that ketchup belongs on the tray not the table. This role encourages good manners, resolves minor conflicts, and helps make lunchtime one of the best parts of the school day.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The ideal candidate for an elementary school lunch monitor is a reliable, patient individual who can effectively supervise and support students during lunch and recess while maintaining a safe, respectful, and orderly environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to supervise and ensure the safety of children in the lunchroom and on the playground
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with students and staff
  • Patience, reliability, and a calm demeanor when working with young children
  • Ability to enforce school rules and expectations consistently and respectfully
  • Capable of responding appropriately to minor injuries or incidents; basic first aid knowledge is a plus
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, and monitor large areas for extended periods
  • Prior experience working with children in a school or childcare setting is preferred

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and DUTIES Additional duties may be assigned.

  • Supervise students in the lunchroom to ensure safe, respectful behavior and adherence to school rules.
  • Monitor students during recess, promoting safe play and resolving minor conflicts as needed.
  • Assist younger students with opening food items or navigating the lunch routine as needed.
  • Report any accidents, injuries, or behavioral concerns to appropriate school staff promptly.
  • Follow all school safety and security protocols
  • Complete all required annual district training

REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time during lunch and recess supervision.
  • Capacity to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow, rain, and extreme temperatures.
  • Strong observational skills to monitor student behavior and ensure safety at all times.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with students and staff in a clear and respectful manner.
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent when addressing student needs or resolving conflicts.
  • Basic problem-solving and decision-making skills to respond appropriately to minor incidents or emergencies.
  • Understanding of and adherence to district policies, contract provisions, and procedures
  • Commitment to supporting district and building goals

WORK ENVIRONMENT and CONDITIONS

  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substances in the workplace throughout their employment in the District
