SUMMARY:
We are seeking an Alternative Education Teacher to help non-traditional learners find their rhythm. This isn't just about grading papers it's about building trust, breaking down barriers, and celebrating the wins that others may miss. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
An Alternative Education Teacher works to address the needs of at-risk students who do not excel in a typical classroom setting. Coordinates the planning, delivery, assessment and ongoing improvement of the ongoing alternative education programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and DUTIES Additional duties may be assigned.
Instructional Learning Environment

  • Hold and articulate high expectations for student learning, achievement and behavior
  • Implement standards-based instruction
  • Deliver instruction that matches the learning needs of all students
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and through correct written grammar and usage
  • Provide accurate, specific and timely feedback to students
  • Engage students in the process of data driven decision making
  • Team-player who can collaborate with colleagues and participate in curriculum development
  • Attend in-service , staff meetings and state training

Instructional Planning and Organization

  • Demonstrate knowledge of course content and process
  • Effectively utilize community resources to enhance student learning
  • Provide substitutes with lesson plans, seating charts, time schedules, required materials and specific instructions, such as individual behavior intervention plans, individual learning strategies and medical/physical information when appropriate
  • Participate actively in collaborative planning
  • Adhere to a daily schedule and when necessary communicate any changes to affected educators
  • Knowledge of adult learner and alternative educational methods and have the ability to apply these methods for adult, at-risk teens and multicultural students

Professional Responsibilities

  • Comply with all rules and regulations in accordance with Board policy and with all reasonable written and/or oral directions issued by administrators
  • Adhere to the Brandywine Community Schools policy for maintaining confidentiality of student records
  • Assist in the implementation of district security initiatives to maintain a safe and secure environment
  • Administer all assessments ethically, properly and accurately
  • Provide or assure implementation of legal and appropriate accommodations for all students with defined learning plans, such as IEP’s, ILP’s, 504’s etc
  • Complete student records as required by district policy
  • Meet deadlines for submitting reports and records
  • Exhibit a pattern of regular and timely attendance.
  • Attend and constructively contribute to staff meetings, school and district committees.
  • Develop and maintain effective collaborative professional relationships.
  • Review student classroom and achievement data with all appropriate personnel who provide instructional and functional support.
  • Encourage respect for rights, opinions, property and contributions of others.
  • Participate in professional growth that enhances knowledge and skills relevant to teaching assignments.
  • Respond to and initiate consultations with parents and staff, in a timely manner, and at appropriate times and places.
  • Prepare for and participate in parent-teacher conferences and IEP conferences.
  • Carry out all assigned supervision duties.
  • Accept a share of responsibility for school sponsored and/or extracurricular activities.
  • Maintain a personal appearance in keeping with the nature of the assignment of the staff member.
  • Report unsafe conditions as well as deficiencies, malfunctions, or breakage of equipment to the building administrator or designated person.
  • Exercise prudence in protecting students, equipment, materials, and facilities from injury or abuse.

REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES
Education and Certification

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field
  • Applicant must be Highly Qualified and Endorsed for this position with a Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate in at least one of the following: Mathematics (EX), Science (DI), English/Language Arts (BA/BX) or Social Studies (RX)

WORK ENVIRONMENT and CONDITIONS

  • May involve lifting, de-escalation, or personal care depending on student needs
  • Involves collaboration with staff, families, and outside agencies
