Position Title: English Language Learner (ELL/ESL) Teacher

Department/Building: District Wide

Reports to: Executive Director of Schools

Assignment: 2026-2027 School Year (184 Duty Days)

Hours: 8 per day, Monday through Friday (Full Time 1 FTE)

Salary Range: $ 46,936 - $ 90,238 (Based on education and experience; wages outlined in the Certified Master Contract located on district website)

Union: Ed MN

FLSA:Overtime Exempt

Primary Objective

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Schools, the English Language Learner (ELL) teacher provides support to the instructional process by identifying eligible English Learner (EL) students and providing instruction to students through a variety of settings including co-teaching, small group instruction, and consultation with classroom teachers. Embedded with the role of ELL teacher, this position will require the active teaching of an Introduction to Indigenious Language and Culure course at Brainerd High School.

Responsibilities include supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; administering language assessments, developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; developing professional learning; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • 8 FTE - ELL Teacher
  • Identifies English learner (EL) students using district and state criteria and assessments.
  • Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates instructional programming to meet the needs of ELL students.
  • Collaborates with the Student Support Services and ELL team on programming, data analysis, and instructional planning.
  • Act as a resource for colleagues by modeling instructional strategies, identifying and developing instructional resources, and providing professional development related to the needs of ELL students.
  • Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans and building academic English and content knowledge.
  • Administers tests and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student language ability.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student achievement; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Instructs English learner students for the purpose of improving their success in academics and skills.
  • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Models English communication for the purpose of developing student ability to communicate effectively in the English language. Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, cafeteria, playground, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. MTSS, Child Study Team, IEPs, teacher/parent meetings, data meetings, department meetings) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and to optimize student learning.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials and correspondence (e.g. grades, progress reports, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, bullying, harassment, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Teachers' Code of Ethics and school board policies.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate resolution.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. other staff, parents, administrators, students etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.
  • Supports classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • 2 FTE - Objibwe Lanugage and Culture Teacher
  • Assist in the development or procurement of curriculum that meets state standards and district requirements through knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Promote a classroom enviornment that is safe and conducive to student learning,
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that translates lesson plans into learning experiences as to best utilize available time for instruction.
  • Instruct students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organize and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Select and requisitions appropriate instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintain inventory records.
  • Supervise students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.
  • Administer standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in education or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Current Minnesota English as Second Language (ESL) License (License Function Code 060206). If not currently licensed in ESL, must be willing and eligible to apply for and receive a Tier 1 or Tier 2 teaching license or Out of Field license in ESL.
  • Ability to speak and write in the Ojibwe lnaguage
  • Have knowledge of Ojibwe culture and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse learners and communities including supporting culturally responsive practices
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience
