What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Receptionist position at Bradford Optical?
Front Desk Receptionist — 24 Hours a Week
We are a small, well-established optometry practice in Bradford, Vermont, looking for a friendly and dependable person to join our office as a front desk receptionist.
Our practice has served the local community since 1981 and has built a strong reputation for friendly, personal patient care. We are a small office. You'll work directly with the optometrist and our highly experienced optician, who has been in the field for more than 30 years.
Schedule
The current schedule is:
Monday, Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
There is a possibility that the practice will expand to four days per week within the next six months, with Wednesday being the additional day. We'd therefore prefer someone who would be open to adding Wednesdays in the future, although the position currently remains three days per week.
Who We're Looking For
Previous medical or optometry experience is not required. We're happy to teach the right person the specifics of working in an eyecare office.
What matters much more to us is finding someone who is:
- Friendly, patient and genuinely comfortable talking with people
- Organized and dependable
- Professional and pleasant on the phone
- Comfortable learning basic computer and office systems
- Able to keep track of details and follow through on tasks
- Willing to take initiative and find better ways of doing things
This is not a high-pressure or "fast-paced" medical office. We see many older patients and have a very personal relationship with the community we serve. The ideal person is someone who doesn't mind taking an extra minute with an elderly patient on the phone, can remain patient when someone is confused or a little eccentric, and generally enjoys helping people.
What You'll Do
This is a traditional medical front-desk position. Responsibilities include:
- Answering and making phone calls
- Greeting and checking in patients
- Scheduling appointments and helping keep the schedule filled
- Sending, receiving and organizing medical records
- Handling routine patient questions and messages
- Performing general front-office and administrative tasks
- Working with the optometrist and optician to keep the office running smoothly
What It's Like to Work Here
We believe good employees should be trusted to do their jobs. The office is not heavily managed, and we don't believe in micromanaging people. If you discover a simpler or better way to handle something, we want to hear it—and you'll generally have the freedom to make the job your own as you become comfortable with it.
You'll also have the benefit of a genuine transition period. Our current receptionist is leaving on excellent terms simply because she's ready for a change, and she will be involved in helping us select and train her replacement. You'll have an opportunity to meet her during the interview process, ask questions about the job directly, and learn the position from someone who has actually been doing it.
We think that's important: we want applicants to have an accurate picture of the job and our office before deciding whether it's a good fit.
Time Off & Flexibility
We try to be flexible about vacations, illness and the realities of life outside of work. While we don't currently use a formal PTO accrual system, our existing employees typically receive approximately 8–10 paid days off per year, in addition to days when the office is closed.
The Bottom Line
We're looking less for a perfect résumé and more for the right person.
If you're organized, dependable, good on the phone, patient with people and would enjoy working in a small professional office where you're trusted to do your job, we'd be very interested in meeting you.
Experience in healthcare, reception or office administration is certainly welcome—but it isn't necessary for the right candidate.
