Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Location: Assigned Club Site(s)
Schedule: Varies based on program needs 2:30pm - 6:00pm or 2:30pm - 7:00pm
The Youth Development Professional (YDP) is more than a monitor—this person is an engaged mentor, positive role model and program leader. The YDP creates a safe, welcoming and high-energy Club environment where young people build skills, confidence and a sense of belonging. This role actively supervises an assigned group, delivers purposeful activities and works closely with coworkers, families, community partners and Club leadership.
What success looks like: Members are safe, known by name, actively participating and excited to return—and the YDP is dependable, prepared, professional and fully present throughout each shift.
Essential Responsibilities:
Youth Supervision & Safety
- Maintain active, attentive supervision of members at all times; remain with the assigned group throughout the shift except during scheduled breaks and meal periods.
- Ensure members remain in approved program areas and follow established transition and dismissal procedures.
- Conduct accurate head counts, attendance checks and member tracking throughout the day.
- Follow all safety, emergency and incident-response procedures and immediately report accidents, injuries, suspected abuse or neglect, safety hazards and critical incidents.
- Fulfill all mandated-reporting responsibilities and maintain appropriate professional boundaries with youth at all times.
- Anticipate risks, intervene calmly and use approved behavior-management and de-escalation practices.
Relationship Building & Member Experience
- Build positive, professional relationships with members and learn their names, interests, strengths and individual needs.
- Create an environment where every member feels safe, welcomed, respected, included and encouraged to participate.
- Model respectful communication, sound judgment, emotional regulation, integrity and a positive attitude.
- Provide guidance and mentorship; recognize and celebrate member effort, growth and achievement.
- Communicate professionally with parents and caregivers about member needs, accomplishments and Club experiences, consistent with Club expectations.
Program Planning & Delivery
- Plan, prepare and lead engaging, age-appropriate daily activities aligned with Boys & Girls Clubs of America Core Program Areas and site goals.
- Provide structured, staff-led programming for approximately 75% of program time; use the remaining time for purposeful free choice, special-interest activities and youth- or staff-led enrichment.
- Adapt activities to different ages, abilities, learning styles and interests so every member can participate meaningfully.
- Bring enthusiasm, creativity and initiative to programming while maintaining an organized, fun and productive learning environment.
- Prepare materials before activities and clean, organize and reset program spaces afterward.
- Complete required participation records, program documentation, evaluations and incident reports accurately and on time.
Teamwork & Club Operations
- Collaborate effectively with fellow YDPs, Club leadership, volunteers and community partners.
- Support coworkers during transitions, high-activity periods, special programs and events.
- Accept coaching professionally, ask questions when needed and promptly apply feedback.
- Remain flexible and move between classrooms or other quieter program rooms and open shared spaces such as gyms, cafeterias and outdoor areas based on site needs.
- Assist at other Club locations, trainings or special events when assigned and maintain clear communication with Club leadership.
Professional Standards
- Report to every scheduled shift on time, prepared and ready to engage with members.
- Wear approved Club attire and maintain a clean, professional appearance.
- Keep personal phones and other distractions put away except as authorized for work or emergencies.
- Communicate respectfully and provide excellent service to members, families, volunteers, coworkers and the public.
- Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate integrity, ethical conduct and good judgment.
- Follow all BGCOKC policies and procedures and complete required meetings and annual trainings.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Experience working with school-age youth in a school, childcare, recreation, camp, coaching, mentoring or similar setting is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and motivate youth, lead group activities and respond constructively to behavior challenges.
- Strong communication, teamwork, organization and problem-solving skills.
- Dependable attendance, professional conduct and the maturity to serve as a positive role model.
- Ability to complete required background screening, orientation, safety training and other job-related certifications or training.
- Bilingual skills are valued but not required.
