TITLE: Teen Specialist

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Teen Specialist is responsible for the daily coordination and delivery of teen programming at a Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo (BGCCAM). The position’s primary focus is to build confidence, competence, character and connections in/with teens and use Club programming to help them reach their full potential. This role manages the full employment cycle of direct reports — including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation and corrective action — in collaboration with Club leadership. Key Roles:
Program Management
- Plans, implements, and evaluates daily teen programming across academic enrichment, social & emotional wellness, career and workforce reediness, and healthy lifestyles.
- Creates hands-on, high-yield activities that intentionally develop core skills aligned with BGCA mission outcomes.
- Designs supplemental programs based on the specific interests and needs of Club teen members.
- Oversees delivery of national programs (e.g., Keystone Club/ Torch Club) and delegates appropriate programming to part-time staff.
- Ensure program areas are safe, clean, organized, and that all equipment is maintained in good working order.
- Suggest program supply purchases within approved Club budget guidelines.
Teen Development
- Builds & maintains positive, appropriate relationships with members, and coaches direct reports to do the same.
- Fosters an inclusive environment that embraces diversity and consistently recognizes member achievement.
- Apply positive guidance and discipline techniques to redirect behavior; ensures staff do the same.
- Communicates regularly with parents/guardians regarding programming, member progress, and behavior concerns.
- Always utilizes active supervision techniques when working with Club members.
Supervisory & Human Resources Responsibilities
- Leads the recruitment cycle for part-time and seasonal staff: conducting structured interviews and making hiring recommendations to leadership.
- Initiates and supports onboarding and training of all new direct reports on Club policies, program standards, positive youth development practices, safety protocols, and role expectations.
- Provides regular, consistent coaching, mentoring, and developmental feedback to direct reports.
- Conducts scheduled formal performance evaluations, documents strengths, areas for improvement, and measurable goals in coordination with Director of Programs.
- Addresses performance gaps promptly using progressive discipline, delivers verbal counseling, issues written warnings, and creates performance improvement plans (PIPs) in partnership with leadership.
- Initiates and documents termination procedures when warranted, partnering with leadership to ensure proper process and documentation.
- Maintains accurate employment records, staff schedules, and timekeeping for direct reports.
- Oversees Teen Club volunteers: Scheduling, supervising, and recognizing contributions.
- May act as Program Director in the absence of the Director of Programs and/or Youth Specialist.
Youth of the Year
- Serves as the Youth of the Year advisor for BGCCAM; prepares JYOY (Ages 10-13) and YOY (14 ) candidates throughout the year for the judging and selection process. Will represent BGCCAM at required YOY events.
Program Administration
- Maintains accurate program records including daily participation attendance, notable achievements, incidents, and budget expenditures.
- Continually evaluates programs to ensure they address the gender and cultural diversity of members.
Marketing & Community Relations
- Promote Club programs to members and families via daily schedules, event announcements, and digital media.
- Develop partnerships with schools, local law enforcement, and other BGC Teen Centers in our area.
- Fosters community partnerships that enrich teen members’ experience and support the Clubs goals.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Required
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in youth development, human services, or a related field, or degree in a relevant field.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience, including training, evaluating performance, and managing conduct issues with direct reports.
- Knowledge of progressive discipline processes and experience initiating corrective action and termination procedures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with staff, members, families, and community partners.
- Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and cooperative working skills.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); comfortable adapting to new technology.
- Valid Class C driver’s license and eligibility to drive Club vehicles
- Demonstrated ethics, integrity, and a safety-oriented mindset.
Preferred
- Experience working in a Boys & Girls Club or similar structured non-profit youth programming environment.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work environment is varied: divided between office settings, program areas, and off-site activities.
- Workload and hours may fluctuate throughout the year; split shifts and days exceeding 8 hours may be required.
- Occasional Saturday or late evening programming/events where attendance is required.
- May be required to drive Club vehicles.
- Must complete work satisfactorily despite significant, frequent distractions throughout the workday.
