School Nurse - Grades PK-12

Boyden-Hull is looking to fill a vacancy for a PK-12 School Nurse for the 2026-27 school year.

Reports to: Superintendent & Building Principals

Essential Functions:

The job of the school nurse is to assist in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student in the district by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health, safety, sanitation and well-being for all students and school employees.  The school nurse is responsible for developing and implementing programs and policies, providing health related services, keeping appropriate records, administering first aid and monitoring of medication, and leading in-services and educating both students and staff members concerning health related issues.

Duties Include:

1. Developing Programs/Policies
   • Assists administrators in developing the school health program
   • Participates in developing the Human Growth and Development and health curriculums
   • Assists the Board of Education and administration in the development of appropriate, health related, district policies.
2. Implementing Programs/Policies
   • Implements Board of Education and building policies/procedures; with special emphasis on the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
   • Counsels students and their families concerning health related issues; and refers to community resources when necessary.
   • Assists in the adapting of school programs to meet the requirements of students with special needs.
3. Providing Routine Health Services
   • Screens vision for all TK-8 grade students
   • Develops health histories for students entering the resource or special education rooms, and updates annually
   • Administers over the counter drugs to students with parental consent
   • Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs
   • Provides other student and staff services as required, and allowable under licensure
4. Keeping Records
   • Maintains current health and immunization records on all students
   • Conferences with parents, students, teachers, and medical professionals; and document such efforts
   • Confirms student absences with parents when necessary
   • Ensures that all health records, documentations, and knowledge are handled in a confidential manner
   • Maintains individual health plans, emergency plans and health histories
5. Administering First Aid and Monitoring of Medication
   • Administers first aid and monitors student use of medication in accordance with Board of Education policies
   • Contacts parents before ill or injured children are sent home
   • Makes arrangements for handling of ill or injured students, and students with special needs
6. Leading Professional Development and Educating
   • Presents health education topics to TK-12 grade students
   • Provides parents with appropriate health related information; such as immunization requirements and presence of communicable diseases
   • Promotes physical, mental and emotional well-being for all students and staff members, so that education can be at its best
   • Promotes a safe, healthy and sanitary school environment
   • Participates in the development of professional development programs when necessary
   • Provides the staff with medication administration certification course
7. Miscellaneous
   • Promotes community awareness related to health, safety and sanitation issues
   • Undertakes other assignments that will facilitate appropriate health services and education at the Boyden-Hull Community School District
   • Maintains daily records for Medicaid eligible students with IEP’s and submits claims monthly. Ensures services are documented on the IEP.
   • Attends field trips as needed including overnight field trips such as sixth grade field trip to Des Moines
   • Attends IEP staffings as needed
   • Assists in office
   • Maintains the records for the IDATP bus driver program. Provides the testing for the drivers.  Maintains current certification in testing practices.
   • Is a member of the crisis team
   • Orders health supplies annually as needed.
8. Cooperate with and work in a courteous manner with co-workers and other personnel.

10. Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the job.
