GENERAL PURPOSE

Assists the Patrol Sergeant in performing supervisory and technical work as a field supervisor of a patrol shift in the absence of a Patrol Sergeant to serve and protect the people of Box Elder County.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Lieutenant or Patrol Sergeant.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Exercises general supervision over the deputies in the patrol division.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

• Assists the Patrol Sergeant in exercising supervision over assigned officers; coordinates their activities and assists in the performance of their duties.

• Provides field supervision of officers; ascertains whether orders or instructions are efficiently carried out and that officers’ performance is satisfactory; follows up on complaints involving shift officers, reports any insubordination or misconduct to the Patrol Sergeant.

• Carries out routine duties including report writing and checking daily work logs turned in by patrol officers; keeps a log for the patrol division and cases handled vehicle maintenance; property recovered.

• Patrols Box Elder County to prevent and suppress crime and to enforce federal, state and county laws and ordinances.

• Apprehends criminals in the act of or after the act of a crime; performs criminal investigation and provides public assistance to the residents of Box Elder County; drives vehicle or patrols on foot; serves summonses and subpoenas.

• Works rotating shifts with the Patrol Sergeant and other Deputies.  

• Assists and directs officers in initial and follow-up investigations of misdemeanor and felony cases while in Patrol status.  Reviews and approves case reports before they are submitted to superiors.

• Performs functions and duties of Deputy I and Deputy II.

• Performs other law enforcement duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

1. Graduation from High School or equivalent; Post Certified, plus 3 years of specialized training, college, special workshops and/or seminars, or comparable experience.

AND

1. Must hold the rank of Deputy III or Detective with Box Elder County Sheriff’s office with a minimum of one (1) year of patrol experience with the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office.

   Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge of modern law enforcement procedures, techniques and equipment; working knowledge of applicable federal, state and county laws and ordinances; considerable knowledge of applicable department rules and regulations; extensive knowledge of the County's geography.

Ability to plan and organize the work of assigned subordinates; ability to observe situations, record them and react quickly and calmly; ability to deal effectively and courteously with fellow officers and the public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to act with impartiality; ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (Certificates, Licenses, etc.)

• Must be a Utah State POST graduate.

• Must have a minimum of 40 hours P.O.S.T. training each year.

• Must have a valid Utah Driver's License.

• Must be able to perform essential functions of job.

• No record of criminal activity or drug use.

• No serious disciplinary actions within previous 12 months.
