GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs technical law enforcement work as a non-uniformed officer in the investigation of advanced crime detection and prevention of violations of laws. Performs other law enforcement duties as needed and assigned by the Department or supervisor.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direct supervision of the Chief Deputy and/or Sergeant.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

• Performs investigations of known/suspected criminals for facts of particular cases.  Frequents haunts of criminals to determine their habits, associates, mannerisms, aliases, and other information.  Records information and maintains street contacts to obtain information necessary for crime prevention or apprehension.

• Examines scenes of crime(s) to obtain clues and gather evidence; investigates suspected persons; investigates crimes and questions witnesses; arrests criminals or suspects; prepares assigned cases, and provides testimony in court.

• Gathers intelligence, investigates and apprehends persons suspected of illegal sale or use of narcotics; develops informants, undercover operations;  arrests narcotic offenders; maintains file on  informants, maintains financial records on undercover drug purchases, expenses, and wages; uses electronic surveillance equipment.  Uses knowledge to identify and field kit test drugs purchased or about to be purchased.  Investigates crimes against persons and crimes against property, and preserves crime scenes. Interviews victims, witnesses, suspects, or any person who may have information.

• Obtains physical evidence at crime scenes. Physical evidence is gathered by using; finger print powders and brushes, plaster and silicone casting, photographs for case preparation, and methods of photography for clear and proper documentation.  Processes and maintains evidence found in connection with crime scene investigations. Prepares evidence, documents and testimony to assist in case preparation for court.

• Writes report of investigations; contacts law enforcement agencies employers and other sources to obtain information concerning individuals under investigation.

• Performs special department and public service duties by giving presentations pertaining to home/business security, drug abuse, and crime prevention.
  

• May be required to be "on call" as designated by assignment.  If assigned as an on-call Detective, must respond and conduct an investigation of incidents including, but not limited to, any of the previously listed crimes and situations, twenty four (24) hours a day seven (7) days a week. "On call" is based on a yearly schedule, as the Department requires.

• Performs other law enforcement duties as assigned and/or needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.  Education and Experience:

A.  Graduation from High School or equivalent; Utah POST Certified, plus 3 years of specialized training, college, special workshops and/or seminars, or comparable experience.

AND

B.  Be a Deputy II or Deputy III with Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office with a minimum of three (3) years Patrol experience and a minimum of one (1) year of patrol experience with the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office.

OR

C.  Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

2.  Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of, but not limited to, modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques and equipment.  Knowledge of federal, state, county, and city criminal and civil laws.

Requires advanced knowledge of the computer and typing skills , knowledge of modern business practices, criminology, psychology, sociology, criminalistics, interviewing and interrogation; communication techniques; search and seizure laws including, probable cause and drafting of legal documents for court.

Skill in the use of firearms and the safe operation of police vehicles. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with fellow officers and the public; ability to observe situations, record them, react quickly and calmly. Ability to exhibit imagination and initiative and problem solving capability. The ability to act with tact, and be non-biased and impartial.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

Certificates, Licenses, etc.

Must be a Utah State POST graduate.

Must have a minimum of 40 hours P.O.S.T. training each year.

Must have a valid Utah Driver's License.

Must be able to perform essential functions of job.

No record of criminal activity, alcohol or drug use.

No serious disciplinary actions within last 12 months.

Must be on-call/available after hours and weekends as per preset schedule.

Must be willing and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

Work history and performance will be taken into consideration when filling this position.
