Special Education Ky Teaching Certificate required with a Master’s degree or planned 5th year degree and three years teaching experience.
1. Reflect on and evaluate specific teaching and learning situations and/or programs.
2. Observe classroom instruction and provide feedback and assistance to classroom teachers to facilitate
improvement and innovation.
3. Assist special education and general education teachers with lesson planning, co-teaching strategies, and provide resources and materials to support staff in effectively implementing the curriculum.
4. Provide and attend professional development and/or training upon request by school and district administrators.
5. Serve as a liaison between the BGISD school district and the school sites.
6. Communicate both verbally and in writing to administrators at assigned sites regarding policies and procedures specific to Special Education Law.
7. Ensure a working knowledge of Special Education Law.
8. Provide guidance to special education staff members in the provision of special services to students in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
9. Provide mentoring and training to special education staff members.
10. Assist staff with interventions and strategies in behavior management (i.e., classroom management programs, individual behavior management programs, conducting a Functional Behavioral Assessment, de-escalation strategies, Safe Physical Management, etc.).
11. Provide guidance to teachers in adaptation of curriculum, methods, and materials to meet the unique needs of special education students.
12. Conduct inquiries into concerns of families of special education students.
13. Conduct home visits when necessary to maintain quality communication between special education staff, school site staff, and families.
14. Consult with outside agencies when necessary.
15. Schedule and coordinate ARC’s according to policy and procedures and timelines.
16. Chair ARC meetings at assigned sites.
17. Assist with folder reviews and audits.
18. Assist with scheduling of special education students at assigned sites.
19. Provide case management to students at assigned site(s).
20. Provide in-service training to staff on special education issues including due process, eligibility, specific areas of disabilities, etc.
21. Apply for testing accommodations for students with an IEP or 504 plan.
22. Collaborate with school psychologists, therapists, counselors, etc. in order to coordinate meetings and plans for students.
23. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff.
24. Adhere to the professional Codes of Ethics adopted by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
25. Maintain appropriate professional appearance.
26. Act as a consistent positive public relations agent for school and district programs and activities.
27. Maintain confidentiality of information regarding individual students and their families.
28. Implement and adhere to all rules and regulations, policies, administrative guidelines, and directives as adopted by the Board of Education, Principal, Administrative Staff, Superintendent and School Based Decision Making Council.
29. Maintain acceptable personal attendance without repeated unexcused absences, tardiness, absences without notification, or abuse of sick leave.
30. Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Special Programs, Principal, Administrative Staff, or Superintendent.
