What are the responsibilities and job description for the Performance Transmission Builder position at Bowler Performance Transmissions?
Bowler Performance Transmissions is looking for an elite Automatic Transmission Builder to join our team. We are trusted by the absolute best in the custom automotive and pro-touring industry, and our clients do not limit us by budget—they expect the highest quality, most reliable performance transmissions available anywhere.
This is not a high-volume, assembly-line rebuild shop, nor is it a place for shade-tree mechanics. We operate at the highest level of detail. In our shop, every transmission is built by one individual from start to finish. You will take ownership of your builds, ensuring that every unit meets our uncompromising standards. If you are a craftsman who understands the deep intricacies of transmission hydraulics and wants to build the best product on the market without cutting corners, this is the place for you.
Key Responsibilities
- Fully remanufacture and custom-build high-performance automatic transmissions from start to finish.
- Perform exhaustive detailing and blueprinting of valve bodies.
- Install Sonnax updates and other premium aftermarket components to ensure maximum performance and durability.
- Diagnose, measure, and assemble with an extreme attention to detail, ensuring perfect hydraulic function and mechanical tolerances.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and highly professional workstation reflecting the premium nature of our products.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: 3–5 years of professional experience specifically in automatic transmission building.
- Modern Overdrive Expertise: Experience with modern overdrive units is highly preferred, specifically: 4L80E, 4L70E, 10L90E, 10R80, 4R70W, 8HP70, and 8HP90.
- Deep Technical Knowledge: Must possess a complete understanding of how an automatic transmission operates, including a strong grasp of hydraulic circuits and fluid dynamics.
- Willingness to Learn: We are open to training the right candidate on the newest transmission platforms (10-speeds, 8HPs) provided you have a rock-solid foundation in older automatics, a flawless track record, and the meticulous attention to detail we require.
- Craftsmanship: Must possess a genuine passion for precision and the ability to fully remanufacture a unit to better-than-factory performance specs.
Why Join Bowler Performance?
At Bowler, you are not just turning wrenches; you are building a premium product that goes into some of the most famous, high-end classic cars and custom builds in the world. We provide an environment where quality is the only metric that matters, giving you the time, parts, and resources to build things the right way, every single time.ce and performance solutions.

Application Question(s):
- A lot of our builds utilize the 4L80E for high-horsepower applications. Can you explain the concept of 'dual-feeding' the direct clutches? How does it alter the hydraulic circuit, and what internal modifications are required?
- Since we blueprint all our valve bodies and use Sonnax updates, walk me through your process for vacuum testing a valve body. What vacuum reading (in in-Hg) do you consider acceptable, and what is your exact process if a bore fails?
- Modern units like the 8HP or 10-speed rely entirely on clutch-to-clutch shifting, without the sprags or overrunning clutches found in older units. If one of these modern units experiences a 'flared' or slipping shift, what hydraulic and mechanical factors in your build process would you investigate first?
- When you are setting up a clutch pack on the bench, how do you determine your target clearance? Walk me through how you measure it, and explain what happens dynamically if a clutch pack is set way too tight versus way too loose.
