Boulder County Public Works Department is seeking to hire a Senior Automotive & Heavy Equip Technician. The Senior Automotive & Heavy Equipment Technician is the lead specialist level classification in the equipment technician series. The Senior Automotive & Heavy Equipment Technician performs a variety of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light duty, medium duty, heavy trailer, truck and road maintenance equipment.
This is a full-time, benefited position that will work Monday - Thursday from 6am-4:30pm April through October and Monday - Friday from 7am - 3:30pm October through April. This position will work at Fleet Services, 5201 St. Vrain Road, Longmont, CO 80503. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
Hiring Salary Range: $65,688.00 - $80,148.00 Annually

- Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline and diesel engines and major drive train components transmissions, differentials and drive units
- Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs on emissions system, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, CAN data bus systems, heating and air conditioning systems, air systems and hydraulic systems
- Performs major and minor tune-ups using appropriate technical information outlined by manufacturer
- Performs annual heavy diesel emissions test and D.O.T. inspections in compliance with state and federal regulations
- Performs general and specialized metal fabrication and welding on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum using gas torch, ARC, MIG, and TIG welders
- Diagnoses and solves complex, non-routine, and remote maintenance and repair problems
- Maintains necessary records of all work performed using computerized fleet management system
- Assists with training of less experienced employees and directs work of others, as required
- Operates equipment such as; cars, trucks, snow plows, graders, dozers, loaders, and semi-trucks for testing, repair and delivery purposes in compliance with D.O.T regulations
- Performs related work, as required
- May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent and at least four years of experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, heavy equipment, and mechanized automotive equipment

CERTIFICATIONS:
- Must have a state of Colorado Diesel opacity inspector certification or be able to obtain within 12 months of hire
- Mobile Air Climate Systems EPA 609 Certification to handle, recover, recycle, and dispose of refrigerants or be able to obtain within 12 months of hire
- D.O.T inspector certification or be able to obtain within 12 months of hire
DRUG TEST:
- Candidates for this position will be required to complete a drug test
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Class A or Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with manual transmission endorsement
- Mobile Air Climate Systems EPA 609 Certification to handle, recover, recycle, and dispose of refrigerants
- D.O.T inspector certification
Back and Upper Body (lifting)
Constantly lift with one or two hands tools and parts weighing 1-30 lbs. from floor to waist. This lift and those below are done with one or two hands. Frequently lift tools and parts weighing 30-80 lbs. from floor to shoulder. Occasionally lift parts weighing 50-70 lbs., and over from floor to shoulder, with co-workers. Occasional push and pull average 100 lb. force using various jacks and supporting devices.
Hands and Arms
Must have strength and dexterity in both arms and both hands for constant use of all tools, including hammers, wrenches, and power tools of all sizes for long periods of time each day. Frequently spend time with arms overhead while lying under equipment, or arms extended with body leaning on equipment, or kneeling to the area being repaired (example of this would be taking brake shoes off using a 12 lb. impact or socket wrench). Occasionally disassemble and assemble various auto parts on work surfaces 35 inches high or at ground level.
Body Movement
Constantly stand, kneel, or lie on concrete floor. Must work in unusual positions, depending on the job being done. Frequently climb on and under equipment while carrying tools and parts weighing 1-30 lbs. Occasionally work out of shop on equipment broken down at job site or on roads in inclement weather.
