The 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is seeking a dedicated Domestic Violence (DV) Deputy District Attorney to join our team. In this role, the Deputy District Attorney will perform legal duties in the prosecution of Domestic Violence criminal cases. 

The 20th Judicial District Attorney is an elected state official, whose office prosecutes adult and juvenile criminal charges, serves as an advisor to Boulder County law enforcement agencies, provides aid to victims and witnesses, appears before and advises grand juries, and pursues remedies for consumer fraud on behalf of individual residents of Boulder County. 

This is a full-time, benefited position with the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office -Boulder County. Work hours are Monday through Friday, as well as periodic on call duty. The Deputy District Attorney will work out of the Boulder District Attorney’s Office, located at 1777 6th Street, Boulder, CO 80302.  Under FLSA guidelines, this position is exempt.


Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.  


Classification Salary Range (Deputy District Attorney 3 to Senior Deputy District Attorney):

                     Deputy District Attorney 3- $115,212-$133,644

                     Senior Deputy District Attorney - $132,432-$190,692

Hiring Range: $115,212-$150,000

In addition to the Boulder County benefits, the District Attorney’s Office offers:

General Description of Job

The Domestic Violence Acute Response Team (DVART) Team Lead performs a variety of legal and supervisory functions with a specialization in domestic violence.


Duties

The Deputy District Attorney performs routine professional legal duties in the prosecution of Domestic Violence criminal cases to include, but not limited to: 

  1.  Prepares and tries cases involving state criminal offenses

  2. Assists in the intake of domestic violence cases

  3. Explains and interprets statutes

  4. Prosecutes routine domestic violence felony matters, and/or misdemeanor cases, including litigation through motions and jury trial

  5. Assists law enforcement in criminal case investigations and review of warrants

  6. Argues bond at hearings and occasionally argue bond in general criminal matters during “weekend court” appearances 

  7. Work extensively with community partners to determine best outcome for domestic violence cases

  8. Periodically serves on call to provide legal advice to law enforcement agencies and answer immediate questions from the general public

  9. Coordinate day-to-day operation of the DVART Team which includes one additional prosecutor and an investigator.

  10. Oversee daily domestic violence arrest reviews and risk assessments to identify high lethality situations and enhance victim safety planning.

  11. Act as the domestic violence expert resource for fellow prosecutors and law enforcement.

  12. Maintain a self-determined caseload of complex domestic violence trial cases including joining in the prosecution of domestic violence trial cases on other prosecutor’s caseloads.

  13. Facilitate quarterly Domestic Violence Task Force Meetings that include law enforcement and community stakeholders.

  14. Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with law enforcement and community stakeholders to strengthen domestic violence intervention efforts.

  15. Provide training and assistance to fellow prosecutors, law enforcement, and community stakeholders regarding domestic violence dynamics, trauma-informed practices, victim safety, strangulation, and trial strategy.

  16. Represent the 20th Judicial District in community meetings, task forces, and any other training or meetings required.

  17. Facilitate the start of a high-risk lethality team in Boulder County.

  18. Continue the efforts of the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office to open a Family Justice Center.

  19. Performs all related work, as required.

  20. May be assigned in emergency situation.

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions.  In this position, we are looking for a Bachelor of Law (LLB) or Juris Doctorate (JD)


LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado
  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience in prosecuting domestic violence cases

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prior prosecution experience
  • Knowledge of Colorado state statutes and general knowledge of substantive case law regarding domestic violence.
  • Sufficient courtroom experience to give helpful advice to less experienced prosecutors and law enforcement officers.
  • Ability to handle a felony and misdemeanor case to trial from start to finish.
  • Interest in working with multi-disciplinary teams to reach a common goal

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado.
  • 5 years litigation experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Minimum 10 felony trials.
  • Significant work on domestic violence cases and issues.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Working knowledge of all Colorado statutes that the District Attorney is mandated to enforce and general knowledge of substantive case law regarding domestic violence.
  • Knowledge of the rules of procedure, rules of evidence, and general workings of the judicial system
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, court officials, law enforcement, the public, and other government agencies
