Court Security Deputy

Salary Range

$6,819 - $9,532 monthly

A deputy assigned to the court security unit works as a uniformed, sworn, firearms-qualified deputy with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. This is an armed position that provides entrance screening, building security, public assistance and law enforcement duties related to maintaining a safe, lawful, and secure environment at the Boulder County Justice Center and the Longmont Courthouse. Duties and responsibilities vary depending on assignment. Some shifts are approximately regular county business hours, but early morning and evening assignments are possible, as well as overtime opportunities, depending upon the needs of the Sheriff’s Office.

Must have completed a State Certified Law Enforcement Training Academy and be COLORADO P.O.S.T. CERTIFIED OR CERTIFIABLE. Certifiable means that you have completed an academy and are awaiting being hired, or have certification from another entity that Colorado P.O.S.T. will accept in lieu of attending a Colorado P.O.S.T. academy. Lateral applicants will be highly considered for the position. Lateral applicants are started at a higher salary level.

Deputies assigned to the court security unit are the first line of contact with visitors and staff to either courthouse. They are uniformed representatives of both Boulder County and the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. Deputies must possess skills which require professionalism, excellent communication skills with a wide variety of people, and the ability to rapidly solve problems and make sound decisions.

A deputy assigned to the Court Security Unit must have basic knowledge of screening visitors, conducting detentions and arrests, and the court processes within the 20th Judicial District of the State of Colorado. The primary job emphasis is on the safety and security of court staff, the public, Sheriff’s Office staff, and in-custody individuals. This includes basic knowledge of the following: properly placing restraints on inmates and arrestees for transport, driving Sheriff’s Office vehicles, operating Sheriff’s Office vehicle accessories, escorting inmates to and from courtrooms, monitoring the courtrooms and inmates during court, exercising control over the courtroom during incidents, knowledge of video court, use of video court equipment, writing incident reports, knowledge of arrest standards and arrest reports, booking knowledge such as the use of NCIC/CCIC, knowledge of the records management system and the jail management system, how to use a department issued radio, knowledge of radio channels, utilizing a firearm and/or intermediate weapons in the defense of self or others, performing investigations, and conducting searches and inventories of inmates, arrestees, and property.

Deputies must also have knowledge, skills, and experience in understanding and applying state and federal law.

New employees receive an 80-hour bank of vacation at the time of hire, in addition to 8 hours of both vacation and medical leave accruals each month.

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Examples of Duties

  • Screens individuals at the Boulder and Longmont courthouses for weapons or contraband and ensures the security of the facilities and properties.
  • Makes arrests in the courthouses upon court order and conduct other investigations and perform arrests.
  • Issues tickets for parking ordinance violations.
  • Completes reports documenting their enforcement activities.
  • Serves civil papers.
  • Monitors and responds to emergency situations within the courthouses, including, but not limited to, panic alarms, disturbances, and medical emergencies.
  • Helps resolve volatile situations or other security concerns with people suffering from medical, mental health, or other emergencies.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • May be reassigned in case of emergency situation.

Required Qualifications

  • This is an armed position. Applicants must be or must be able to become firearms qualified, including, handgun, rifle, and less-lethal shotgun.
  • Must be able to pass the Jail Division Essential Job Demands (EJD) test.
  • Must be P.O.S.T. certified or certifiable (see description above for details)
  • Per BCSO Policy 513, deputies must carry at least one approved intermediate weapon or Taser as a less lethal alternative to their firearm. They must maintain qualification and training standards for their intermediate weapons.
  • It is preferred that all newly hired or assigned deputies in the court security unit qualify with a rifle through the firearms program.
  • It is preferred that applicants have, or are willing to attend, Crisis Intervention Training.
  • Must be 21 years old.
  • Must not have any felony convictions or committed/been arrested for any felonies.
  • Must not have used any illegal drugs in the past three years.
  • Must not have any domestic violence offense related convictions or domestic violence related restraining orders in effect.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and have a good driving record.
  • Must not have any DUI/DWAI convictions or driver's license suspensions or revocations within 24 months of application or more than one DUI/DWAI conviction in lifetime.
  • Boulder County Sheriff’s Office policy strictly prohibits the use of marijuana by its employees; applicants must not use marijuana from the time of receiving a conditional job offer. A history of excessive use of illegal drugs, or other offenses, could disqualify an applicant.

Supplemental Information

Physical Requirements

Seeing, hearing, speaking, and writing legibly. Occasional reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Frequent sitting, standing, and walking, which may be required for long periods of time and may involve climbing stairs or ladders and walking up inclines and on uneven terrain. Addition physical requirements may include frequent lifting and/or moving up to 45 pounds.

  • Vision - Dual vision is required. 20/20 minimum, natural or corrected, in both eyes and have minimum peripheral vision of 700 in both eyes. Constantly uses vision (day and night) to observe criminal and non-criminal activity, occasionally driving motor vehicles. Constantly is required to differentiate and distinguish colors, shapes, distances, and sizes of objects, people, and animals.
  • Hearing - Dual hearing is required. When tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard. Constantly uses hearing to detect sounds of criminal and non-criminal behavior. Constantly uses hearing to distinguish sources and content of a wide variety of sounds. Constantly uses hearing to monitor and use a police radio, radio telephone and standard telephone to communicate with the dispatch center, other officers and the public. Occasionally must be able to hear and understand a whispered voice from a distance of twenty feet. Occasionally must hear people verbally calling/yelling for assistance from a distance of one hundred feet.
  • Sense of Smell - Intact. Occasionally uses the olfactory sense to detect illegal use of drugs or chemicals. Occasionally uses the olfactory sense to detect and evaluate the presence of toxic or offensive vapors, smoke and fuels.
  • Speech - Must be able to speak and understand the English language. Constantly uses voice to communicate with other persons and dictate reports. Frequently verbally directs suspects, animals, and citizens what to do using a louder than normal speaking voice.
  • Body Movement
  • Back and Upper Body - Frequently lift from the ground to waist or move objects weighing fifty pounds or more and carry objects weighing fifty pounds or more, over fifty feet.

b .Hands and Arms - Constantly types on a keyboard and writes using writing tools such as pens, pencils and markers.

  • Occasional reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Frequent sitting, standing, and walking, which may be required for long periods of time and may involve climbing stairs or ladders and walking up inclines and on uneven terrain. May occasionally operate a motor vehicle. Applicants must be able to pass the Essential Job Demands (EJD) test. Applicants must be able to become weapons certified. This is an armed position.

SITTING: Sitting is performed on an occasional to frequent basis.

STANDING: Standing performed on a constant basis.

WALKING/RUNNING: Walking is performed on a constant basis. Deputies are required to demonstrate the ability to complete a maximum effort essential job function evaluation in the form of an obstacle course of running a distance of approximately 300 feet, or 100 yards, from a sitting position, within which you will have to navigate an obstacle course requiring you to open two doors as you enter and leave a room, serpentine around two stationary obstacles and clear two 16” high hurdles within 45 seconds. Upon completion of the 100-yard run, you will then have to place a compliant person into handcuffs while giving verbal commands (double-locking is not expected).

LIFTING: Deputies may also be required to lift and carry an impaired or combative individual from 20-30 horizontal feet in booking on an occasional basis. Deputies are required to demonstrate the ability to lift a 150 pound drag dummy and hold it off the ground for a period of 10 seconds. Deputies must also demonstrate the ability to lift a 25-pound medicine ball and carry it up 13 stairs and back down, lift 35 pounds from the ground up to chest height and then return it to the ground.

CARRYING: A duty belt and 2-way radio are also carried and worn constantly weighing approximately 8.5 pounds.

PUSHING: Deputies must demonstrate the ability to drag the 150-pound dummy on a level surface 25 five feet.

STOOPING/BENDING: Stooping is performed on a frequent basis when performing various tasks throughout the day.

CRAWLING: Crawling is only done on a seldom basis and only for a short distance.

CLIMBING: Climbing stairs is performed on an occasional to frequent basis.

TWISTING/TURNING AT THE WAIST AND NECK: Twisting/Turning at the waist and neck occurs on an occasional to frequent basis for deputies. The amount of twisting will vary on a daily basis.

BALANCING: Good balance is required when restraining/carrying a combative individual.

Power grip - Occasional, when restraining inmates, performing use of force techniques, pushing/pulling carts.
