The Production Manager Position
Our new Production Manager will report directly to our highly experienced Director of Operations in managing the production and our team members who are running 5 – 7 production lines.
What You’ll Do
The Production Manager is responsible for the on-site leadership and supervision of all daily bakery manufacturing operations from mixing through baking, cooling, processing, slicing, and packing. This role ensures that production is executed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), company policies, and all regulatory food safety requirements including SQF standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage and lead production and packing personnel directly and through supervisors/team leaders across shifts, including workforce planning, scheduling, coaching, development, and performance management.
- Execute and adhere to the daily production schedule, ensuring labor, materials, and equipment resources are properly allocated to meet output requirements.
- Monitor day-to-day floor operations through routine presence in production areas to ensure adherence to schedule, identify bottlenecks, remove barriers, and reinforce safety and quality expectations.
- Ensure all finished products are produced on time, and meet established quality, food safety, and customer specifications.
- Verify that all production, yield, downtime, and inventory records are accurate and completed in real time.
- Lead Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement initiatives to drive operational efficiency, reduce waste, and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Collaborate closely with Maintenance, Sanitation, Quality Assurance, R&D, and Safety teams to coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs, sanitation schedules, and operational improvements.
- Clearly communicate production priorities, quality standards, safety expectations, and company policies to supervisors and team leaders; ensure consistent accountability and enforcement.
- Develop, implement, and maintain production and packing procedures, job aids, work instructions, and related operational documentation.
- Support hiring, onboarding, discipline, and termination processes in alignment with Boston Baking Inc. guidelines and company values.
- Ensure FIFO (First In, First Out) inventory processes are strictly followed for ingredients, packaging supplies, work-in-process, and finished goods.
Required Skills & Abilities:
· Strong understanding of food production or commercial bakery processes including mixing, baking, cooling, packaging, and material flow.
· Ability to execute daily production schedules and adjust staffing or resources to meet operational needs.
· Ability to lead, motivate, and develop production team members in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate production priorities, quality standards, and safety expectations.
· Ability to coach team members, provide constructive feedback, and address performance issues professionally.
Education & Work Experience:
· High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Operations Management, Manufacturing, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred.
· 3–7 years of experience in food manufacturing, commercial baking, or related production environments, with increasing responsibility.
Physical Requirements:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in both office and production floor environments; to stand and walk for extended periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate amounts of weight; to work in varying temperatures typical of bakery production environments
