Overview
The Arden Technical Center is a core R&D hub within BorgWarner’s Emissions, Thermal, and Turbo Systems (ETTS) business. Our team develops and validates combustion-related automotive technologies that support cleaner, more efficient propulsion systems. We are seeking a Test Engineer with strong expertise in engine exhaust emissions testing to join our Test Engineering group and help advance our next generation of products.
Position Summary
The Emissions Test Engineer will serve as a technical contributor within the test engineering team, responsible for operating, maintaining, and improving state-of-the-art emissions measurement systems. This role blends hands-on laboratory work with process development, equipment ownership, and cross-functional collaboration. In addition to emissions testing responsibilities, this role will provide leadership and program management for other types of testing within the technical center to include gas stand thermodynamic and functional testing, engine stand testing, electric machine and power electronics testing, and vibration and harshness testing, among others.

Key Accountabilities
Testing & Equipment Ownership
- Operate advanced measurement systems for engine and component testing.
- Acquire, install, and commission new testing equipment as needed.
- Maintain and manage emissions instrumentation to ensure accuracy, reliability, and uptime.
- Perform routine and advanced calibration of emissions analyzers and related systems.
- Develop, document, and implement test procedures for measurement and validation.
- Ensure test processes meet internal quality standards and regulatory requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve test efficiency, repeatability, and data quality.
- Work closely with test operators, technicians, and engineers to ensure proper execution of emissions tests.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and support root-cause investigations.
- Provide technical guidance on emissions measurement best practices.
- Maintain documentation related to equipment, processes, and calibration records.
- Contribute to lab capability planning and technology upgrades.
- Create and manage program timelines to meet critical milestones.
- Partner with product engineering to support development programs.
- Facilitate cross training for team members on test engineering tools and processes as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.
- 6 years of experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Hands-on experience with engine or industrial exhaust emissions testing (e.g., FTIR, FID, NDIR, PM measurement systems).
- Strong understanding of emissions measurement principles, calibration methods, and regulatory standards.
- Ability to diagnose equipment issues and implement corrective actions.
- Must be willing to travel 1-2 times per year.
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.
- 12 years of experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Extensive experience in an R&D or test-lab environment.
- Knowledge of EPA, CARB, or global emissions regulations.
- Experience developing or refining test procedures
- Proficiency in one or more software development languages and knowledge of best practices
- Possess broad knowledge of hardware, software, and test strategies in the following areas
- Gas stand thermodynamic and functional testing
- Engine stand testing, including engine controls
- Electric machine and power electronics testing
- High and low cycle fatigue testing
- Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) testing
- Digital communication protocols (CAN, Modbus, etc.)
- Signal processing, Filtering, FFT analysis
- Strong adaptability with the ability to learn quickly.
- Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to data integrity.
- Comfortable working hands-on with complex instrumentation.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams to all levels of the organization
- Self-driven, organized, and eager to improve processes and capabilities.
