Aseptic Compounding Pharmacy Technician

JOB SUMMARY:

Works closely with the pharmacist to ensure the health and safety of patients. Supports the pharmacist by locating, dispensing, packing, labeling, and shipping orders promptly, following all laws and regulations as well as Boothwyn Pharmacy policies and procedures. Works collaboratively with other pharmacy technicians to make all compounds requested and maintain the laboratory and equipment. Provides friendly customer service to patients and health care professionals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Pharmacy Compliance:

· The pharmacy technician must conduct himself/herself in a professional manner in conformity with all applicable federal, state, and municipal laws and regulations in his/her relationship with the public, healthcare professions, and pharmacists

· Function within the limits of the law and Boothwyn Pharmacy policies and procedures. This includes HIPAA regulations.

· Maintain formula log files, filing at least once weekly.

· Be properly attired in clean scrubs (Boothwyn provides) and wear appropriate safety equipment per Boothwyn Pharmacy standard operating procedures.

· Work to maintain a safe, clean workplace and demonstrate an understanding of emergency/disaster plans.

· Ensure daily, weekly, and monthly activities are followed and recorded within the appropriate monitoring and compliance system.

Prescription Fulfillment:

· Correctly read prescription, interpret physician intent, and process prescriptions in The Compounder system in a precise, efficient manner.

· Prepare correct formula log sheet for standard items. Non-standard items should be referred to the Compounding Pharmacist.

· Accurately and efficiently compound orders following formulas. This includes mixing, packaging, labeling, and associated record-keeping. Present order and supporting items to pharmacist in an ordered, logical manner for final check before dispensing.

· Aseptically clean and maintain ingredient, equipment, and batch product inventories at acceptable levels, maintain API par level and inventory control.

· Conduct oneself in a manner upholding the moral and ethical practice of pharmacy.

· Provide prompt, friendly service to the clients. Handle patient complaints in a caring and efficient manner.

Process Administration:

· Understand and perform order check-in/return/reorder process without need for supervision or follow-up.

· Work with office staff to ensure driver delivery and shipped prescriptions are prepared according to schedule and stored in a centralized location.

· Engage in continuous improvement and education of aseptic techniques and processes.

· Actively work with the sterile compounding team in identifying areas of improvement.

· Actively look for and immediately report any insanitary conditions observed or potentially developed.

· Perform other tasks and duties assigned by Pharmacy Manager Compound Division to assist in the smooth, efficient operation of lab.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

· Satisfactory completion of Boothwyn Pharmacy aseptic technique validation program and satisfactory semi-annual testing thereafter

· Maintain CE credits necessary to sustain CPhT certification

o Completion of a single course, a minimum of 40 hours of instruction and experience in the areas of aseptic technique, critical area contamination factors, environmental monitoring, structure and engineering control related to facilities, equipment, and supplies, sterile preparation calculations and terminology, sterile preparation compounding documentation, quality assurance procedures, aseptic preparation procedure including proper gowning and gloving technique, handling of hazardous drugs, cleaning procedure, and general conduct in the clean room. Such training shall be obtained through the completion of a course sponsored by ACPE accredited provider which provides 40 hours of instruction and experience.

o Completion of structured on-the-job didactic and experiential training program which provides sufficient hours of instruction and experience in the Boothwyn Pharmacy's sterile compounding process and procedures

o Four hours of ACPE accredited continuing education relating to one or more of the areas listed in the single course. The four hours are to be completed during the two-year period of the licensure registration.

o Sterile compounding training

o Sterile training completion on equipment, gloving, and gowning

· Assisting with the compliance of environmental monitoring, testing, and documentation

· Ensure compliance of aseptic lab protocols

· Actively participate in inventory control

· Creating a compounding log (verified by Pharmacist)

· Possess a basic understanding of Microsoft Office software and PK software (The Compounder)

· Ability to operate basic office equipment such as copier, fax, telephone

EDUCATION: High School Diploma (required) ; Bachelor's degree (preferred)

EXPERIENCE: At least 12 months of job-related experience, including preparation of non-sterile and sterile products required.

_ REQUIRED CERTIFICATES/LICENSURE_: PCTB, CPhT, or state issued certification

Texas E-5 certification
